Solgaard Carry-On Closet Review | Is it really a game-changer?

Solgaard carry-on closet

Reviewed

For the longest time, my current carry-on,  met all my criteria, leaving me content and uninterested in exploring other options. However, as I continually packed and unpacked, the idea of effortlessly hanging up my clothes and heading out became an enticing daydream.

What is a hanging closet?

A hanging closet, as exemplified by the Carry-On Closet, is a brilliant and long-overdue solution to the common inconvenience of unpacking while traveling. The focal point of this ingenious concept lies in its patented “closet,” an innovative shelving system designed for efficient packing.

You can neatly fold and organize their clothing within this hanging structure. When it’s time to unpack, a simple loosening of the straps allows the bag to be effortlessly hung from the suitcase handle, transforming it into a portable, organized closet on the go. It’s a clever and practical solution that simplifies the packing and unpacking process for travelers, making life on the road considerably more convenient

So with out further a do, here is my Solgaard Carry-on closet review!

Is the Solgaard Carry-On closet a gamechanger?

As you might know, I am a seasoned backpacker and have always opted for a backpack rather than a suitcase. So it was natural that my journey toward a suitcase featuring a built-in closet started with a backpack, the Solgaard Venture.  I loved the built-in closet and started taking it on longer trips.

However, as I started to travel more for business, I started to want a suitcase. But before we dive into a deeper review, make sure to check if a built-in closet is right for you!

The Carry-On Closet is right for you if:

  • You frequently stay at accomendations with limited storage facilities such as hostels and small hotels
  • You have a dislike for unpacking but still desire a well-organized travel experience.
  • You prefer organizing your clothing in distinct compartments for efficient packing.
  • You’re seeking a robust and resilient suitcase capable of withstanding global travel challenges and are willing to pay for it.

On the other hand, the Carry-On Closet might not be the right fit if:

  • You prefer to maximize every inch of available luggage space.
  • Your preference leans towards soft-shell or two-wheel luggage options. If you prefer a soft option, check out the Solgaard Endeavor review

 Features of the Carry-On Closet

The Carry-On Closet is available in two sizes: the Carry-On Closet Medium, measuring 20.8″ x 13.4″ x 9″, and the Carry-On Closet Large, measuring 22.4″ x 14.6″ x 9.6″.

The medium size is designed to fit within the bag sizers of most domestic and international airlines, while the Large size is tailored to comply with the baggage allowances of most US carriers. I opted for the large size, but both sizes have the same amazing features:

Five-Shelf Closet

The Carry-On Closet offers a versatile five-shelf hanging organizer that can be easily removed and collapsed. It includes shelves of various sizes and styles, such as open, zippered, and divided compartments. Once you’ve packed your items, simply pull the side straps to compress the closet, and it conveniently fits into the right half of the suitcase beneath an adjustable clasp. To unpack, release the compression straps and secure the closet to the suitcase handle (don’t forget to fasten the support buckle for upright stability) or hang it on a hook or closet rod at your destination.

Polycarbonate Shell and Aluminum Frame

Solgaard claims that the Carry-On Closet’s suitcase shell is virtually unbreakable. While I cannot personally attest to the validity of this statement, I can confirm that the suitcase can support my weight when fastening it shut.

One-Hand Pinch Opening with TSA-Approved Lock

In contrast to traditional zipper closures, the original Carry-On Closet features two latches for closure. To seal the suitcase, fold and insert each latch, and to open it, simply pop the tabs inward. The bag also comes equipped with a built-in, TSA-approved, three-digit lock for added security and peace of mind.

360° Wheels and Ergonomic Handle

Solgaard boasts “frictionless” wheels, which should feel familiar and intuitive to owners of spinner luggage, facilitating easy maneuvering through the airport. The suitcase’s handle is robust, with a larger circumference compared to many other suitcases I’ve used in the past.

USB Charging

The Carry-On Closet includes a compartment for a USB charger, though the charger itself is not included and must be provided separately (Solgaard also offers it for purchase).

Sustainable Materials

This suitcase is predominantly constructed from recycled materials, featuring a recycled polycarbonate shell and a Shore-Tex® lining made entirely from 100% ocean-bound plastic. According to the brand, each of these suitcases helps remove 6 pounds of ocean-bound plastic from coastal communities, contributing to a more sustainable travel experience.

Solgaard Carry-on closet in dark green: review

Personal review: Solgaard carry-on closet

I was pretty skeptical when I first ordered the carry-on closet but was extremely impressed with the quality and functionality of the suitcase. I really love my Solgaard carry-on closet, especially for business travel.

What I find appealing about the Carry-On Closet:

  1. The shelving storage system complements my organized mindset seamlessly. It makes achieving tidy and structured stacks an effortless task.
  2. Unpacking becomes a hassle-free process. Typically, my eagerness to explore leaves little time for meticulous unpacking, but this suitcase allows me to do so without sacrificing any moments of enjoyment at my destination.
  3. The compression feature is really impressive and really safes up a lot of space.
  4. The suitcase’s construction radiates durability, encompassing a robust telescoping handle and a resilient hard shell.
  5. Solgaard’s commitment to sustainability is truly noteworthy, especially considering the detrimental environmental impact of travel. Owning a suitcase from a brand actively contributing to positive environmental change is a comforting choice.
  6. The Built-in Closet can be removed completely. If you decide to use the suitcase to its maximum capacity, you can easily remove the closet.

What I didn’t like so much

  • The Carry On suitcase sometimes tips over, especially when packed too heavily and trying to unpack it
  • I personally prefer a zipper over a clamshell to close a suitcase. If you prefer a zipper, check the Carry-On Closet Lite.
  • The handle can get stuck, especially when you pack very tight.

Traveling with Solgaard built-in closet

Mastering the art of packing a new suitcase is a process that involves a fair share of time and a bit of trial and error, especially when you try to pack so the suitcase won’t fall over. Before we go into packing the compartments, here are some general packing tips for the Solgaard Carry-On Closet.

How to pack the Solgaard Carry-On Closet

1. Try handing the carry on closet to a door or something stable while you add your clothes

2. Start from Bottom to top. This is way easier as the carry on closet touches the ground when attached to the suitcase making it easier to fill in the bottom compartments first.

3. Fill up each compartment to 75%. This way it compresses perfectly.

4. I recently went back to rolling my clothes again instead of folding them. For more convenience when taking things out, I use a small rubber band.

How to pack the compartments

Top Shelf:

The top shelf, the narrowest one with a mesh barrier, is designated for storing bras, underwear, and occasionally socks. I only use it for socks when necessary, as it’s often more efficient to tuck socks inside my shoes, and only some of my footwear requires socks.

Second Shelf

Much taller than the top shelf and also equipped with a small mesh barrier, this shelf serves as my wildcard space. It accommodates bigger items like my sweater or my sleepwear..

Third Shelf

The larger of the two zippered pockets, this shelf is where I pack my tops, dresses, and jumpsuits, as these usually constitute the majority of my wearable clothing.

Fourth Shelf:

The second, slightly zippered pocket is where I prefer to pack my pants and jeans, even though they take up more space than tops.

Bottom Shelf:

Located at the bottom, this spacious open compartment is divided into sections. It serves as my catch-all for items such as swimsuits, tights, or athletic wear and works best when these items are neatly rolled up.

Navigating Cultural Sensitivity

Caribbean Edition

A Guide to Respectful Travel

I must admit, writing about cultural sensitivity in travel makes me a bit nervous. Yet, it’s a topic very close to my heart, especially after years of exploring the Caribbean.

Travel is undeniably a privilege, often inaccessible to many locals due to visa restrictions and lingering effects of colonial history. Acknowledging this privilege highlights the importance of practicing cultural sensitivity and ensuring that tourism positively impacts the vibrant communities of the Caribbean.

What is cultural senstive travel?

Cultural sensitive travel is all about showing respect, understanding, and appreciation for the diverse cultures you encounter while traveling. It’s about immersing yourself in local customs, traditions, and ways of life with an open heart and a willingness to learn.

Embracing sustainable tourism and cultural sensitivity isn’t just about being a responsible traveler—it’s about enriching your travel experiences and leaving a positive impact on the places you visit.

By engaging with local cultures respectfully and supporting sustainable practices, travelers play a crucial role in preserving the world’s cultural diversity and natural beauty for future generations.

Understanding Cultural Etiquette

Before you travel to the Caribbean, take time to research cultural norms specific to each island. For example, in the Caribbean, greetings are often warm and varied, reflecting the region's rich cultural diversity. For instance, in Jamaica, a common greeting is "Wa gwaan?" which means "What's going on?" This casual greeting invites friendly conversation.

In Trinidad and Tobago, locals often greet each other with a cheerful "Good morning" or "Good evening," accompanied by a firm handshake or a warm hug. On some islands, such as Barbados, a nod of the head or a gentle wave is considered polite and respectful when greeting acquaintances. Understanding these nuances in greetings helps travelers connect more authentically and avoid coming across as rude.

    Practicing Cultural Sensitivity

When you visit religious or sacred sites in the Caribbean, like Hindu temples in Trinidad or Rastafari communities in Jamaica, it's essential to show deep respect. Follow dress codes and honor any rules about photography by asking for permission, especially during ceremonies.

    Harmony Beach in Montego Bay

    Engaging with Local Communities

Approach interactions with humility, openness and an open heart. Whether you're at a local market, a community event, or simply chatting with residents, be genuinely interested in their stories and perspectives. Take the time to listen and learn about their way of life—it’s a mutual exchange that enriches both sides. For a more immersive experience, choose to stay in locally owned accommodations and support nearby businesses. Not only does this enhance your cultural journey, but it also directly contributes to the thriving local economy and community spirit.

    Learning Basic Phrases

Learning a few phrases in the local language, such as greetings and common expressions, goes a long way in showing respect and appreciation. Language apps and phrasebooks are helpful tools for learning and practicing basic Caribbean Creole or Spanish, depending on the island you visit.

    Respecting Traditions and Customs

Each Caribbean island has its own set of traditions and customs deeply rooted in history and culture. Whether it’s participating in a crop-over festival in Barbados or a J'ouvert celebration in St. Lucia, embrace these cultural events respectfully. Learn about their significance and participate with respect for local customs.

doubles in Port of Spain, Trinidad

    Adapting to Dining Etiquette

Dining customs across the Caribbean islands reflect diverse cultural influences. You'll encounter warm hospitality and often dine communally. Respect local traditions regarding seating arrangements, utensil use, and sharing meals. It's important to be mindful of dietary restrictions or allergies; politely communicate your needs to ensure a comfortable dining experience for everyone. For instance, in Jamaica, it's considered unusual to request salt from a Rastafarian, as it symbolizes purity and is typically avoided in their diet. Understanding these nuances enhances your dining experiences while respecting local customs.

    Handling Cultural Misunderstandings

Misunderstandings can occur, even with the best intentions. If you unintentionally offend someone or make a cultural mistake, apologize sincerely and seek to understand where things went wrong. Approach the situation with humility and a willingness to learn from your experiences.

    Embracing Cultural Diversity

One my greatest joy of traveling in the Caribbean is experiencing its cultural diversity. From Afro-Caribbean to Indigenous influences, each island has a unique vibe, blend of traditions and histories.

In Trinidad, Carnival bursts with vibrant energy, merging African traditions with local culture through lively parades and colorful festivities. Jamaica, on the other hand, showcases the deep impact of Rastafarian culture, influencing music and daily life with its spiritual beliefs and unique customs. Meanwhile, in St. Lucia, you can discover a blend of Afro-Caribbean and French influences, reflected in their vibrant Creole language, music like the traditional zouk, and lively folk celebrations such as La Woz.

    Why does it matter?

As someone deeply passionate about this region, I’ve come to realize that tourism isn’t all sunshine and piña coladas. Sure, it boosts economies, but at what cost? Too often, we breeze through cultural sites, snapping photos for Instagram without truly understanding their spiritual or historical significance. This turns sacred traditions into commodities, gradually eroding their authenticity. Worse still, our visits sometimes leave islands reliant on foreign cash, distracting from urgent needs like sustainable development and protecting the environment. The rise of mega-resorts and tourist hotspots threatens cherished natural landscapes, from beach closures to ecological damage. To really make a positive impact, let’s show genuine respect for local cultures, cherish their traditions, and actively support sustainable tourism efforts that empower and benefit the communities we visit.

It’s time to travel with purpose and leave a lasting positive footprint in this paradise we love.

My Osprey Sojourn wheeled 60L review

My Osprey Sojourn wheeled 60L review

    Osprey Sojourn

    Review

Hey there, welcome to my Osprey Sojourn Review!

I switched from a regular backpack to a backpack with wheels two years ago to be more comfortable and to not have to carry my luggage on my back at all times. I absolutely HATED having to the take the backpack on and off and carry it. It was so annoying!  Also, I felt like I wanted to have a more sophisticated looking piece of luggage when checking into more upscale hotels.

Over the past two years, I’ve wheeled the Osprey Sojourn across countless airports and cities, and I’ve carried on my back to reach the most remote accommodation from treehouse to beach bungalow.

In this review, I’ll break down all of my experiences, the reasons why I switched, what you can expect from the Osprey Sojurn with wheels, and why I think it’s a great backpack (but has its flaws).

Quick verdict: The most practical luggage ever!

After bringing the Osprey Sojourn on my past 8 trips, I can say: it truly revolutionized the way I move around with my luggage!

The travel backpack with wheels has made traveling so much more enjoyable by:

    • Allowing me to wheel it on airports or cities so I could reach my destination without breaking my back
    • Maintaining my independence: I can still maneuver and carry my belongings by myself if needed to.
    • Making me look more sophisticated: when wheeled it looks sleek and can be brought to more sophisticated accommodations
    • Giving me enough space to travel for 3 months

While I am still not too excited about the color options, I have come to love the extra comfort and freedom provided by the Osprey Sojourn.

My initial concerns about the weight of the backpack itself didn’t prove to matter too much. No matter how much I packed, I would never reach the airline limits.

Overall, the comfortable wheeling and carrying experience make up for the extra 300 grams and the lack of color choices! It’s definitely not cheap, BUT, the Sojourn’s quality seems to be amazing. Even after countless miles traveled, it has very little damage. Plus, Osprey offers a free repair service for all its packs.

Advantages and disadvantages of the Osprey Sojourn

Pros of the Osprey Sojourn wheeled backpack

    Easily convertible

You can convert the Osprey Sojourn from a wheeled suitcase like piece of luggage to a backpack in less than 20 seconds. So you are always quickly ready to jump on that boat taxi when needed to.

Comfortable to carry on your back

It has an advanced backpack system with well-padded, soft hip belts and shoulder straps that feel great against your skin. The multiple adjustment options are a lifesaver, allowing you to balance the weight perfectly on your back. While it doesn’t quite match the comfort of my old Jack Wolfskin backpack without wheels, the Sojourn is the only wheeled backpack I’ve found that I can comfortably carry for up to 30 minutes. It really makes traveling easier and more enjoyable!

    Smooth to wheel

Not only does it have a super comfortable backpack system, but it’s also a breeze to wheel around. The generously sized wheels can handle uneven ground like a champ, and it even stands up on its own

    Look apporpriate

The Sojourn strikes the perfect balance between practicality and style. It lets me roll into upscale accommodations with a sophisticated look, and when I’m out backpacking, it seamlessly fits in and handles everything effortlessly.

Disadvantages of the Osprey Sojourn wheeled backpack

    Higher Weight

The comfortable backpack system, sturdy handle and steady make the Sojourn heavier. Compared to other backpack or duffles with wheels, the Sojourn weighs about 10% more which can be a disadvantage if you plan to carry it for longer periods. However, it makes up for its increased weight by providing you with the most comfortable straps and very sturdy wheels.

    Lack of color choices

It might be just me, but I am unhappy with both color choices currently offered.

    Who is the Sojourn for?

You will love the Osprey Sojourn if:

    • You used are an independent traveler who appreciates comfort
    • Intent to carry your luggage on your back at times
    • You care about quality luggage and want your belongings to be protected

The Osprey Sojourn is not for you if:

    • You intend to carry it on your back for hours
    • You don’t switch accommodations or travel for vacation purposes
    • A piece of luggage to be used as carry on as well
    Travel backpack with wheels

    Product Overview

The Osprey Sojourn is the most sophisticated travel backpack with wheels. It easily transforms from wheeled luggage to backpack in seconds.

It combines the best of both worlds: the flexibility of a backpack and the comfort of a suitcase!

    HighRoad chassis & Oversized wheels

Thanks to its HighRoad chassis and oversized wheels, you can easily wheel it through airports or on uneven surfaces, taking the weight off your shoulders!

    Stowaway AirScape™ backpanel and harness

You can convert the Sojourn into a backpack in seconds when you need to reach your treehouse or beach bungalow. The comfortable hip and shoulder straps make carrying it a breeze, even for someone like me who isn’t very fit.

    StraightJacket compression straps

They cinch down your packed items, giving you extra storage space when you need it. It’s perfect for those times when you need to squeeze in just a little bit more

    Conclusion

Get the Osprey Sojourn if you are an adventurous traveler but enjoy being comfortable!

I love traveling the Osprey Sojourn and have been using it for almost all trips as a check-in, but business trips. I wheel my luggage about 80% of the time and can’t even imagine going back to carrying all my luggage at airports, bus stations and through cities.

My biggest concern was the weight, and ended up not mattering at all. No matter how much I packed (even with numerous tins of Ackee), I could never surpass airline limitations and was always comfortable wheeling and carrying it. If you are worried about the weight, consider Osprey’s Farpoint wheeled which is XXX grams lighter, but also not as smooth to wheel and comfortable to carry.

I love the concept of a wheeled backpack so much that I just upgraded my carry on to a wheeled backpack as well.

If you are considering a backpack with wheels as a carry-on luggage, check out my reviews.

    Travel backpack with wheels

    Osprey Sojourn Alternatives

Osprey’s Farpoint with wheels feels very similar to the Sojourn, but less comfortable to carry and roll. Here is a detailed comparison.

If you don’t like the color options either or plan on carrying the backpack for less then 15 minutes at a time, I highly recommend checking out Deuter Aviant Pro Movo. Both, the carrying and wheeling experience are not as comfortable as the Sojourn, however I think its a very good budget option!

Best for: Travelers who really don’t plan on carrying it over 20 minutes.

    Deuter Aviant Pro Movo Features

Pro Tip: Before your trip, practice converting the Osprey Sojourn from a backpack to wheeled luggage and adjust the straps to fit you perfectly. This will save you time and hassle when you’re on the go, ensuring a smooth and comfortable transition whenever you need it.

    backpack open with packing cubes

    Packing tips

    1. Organize with Packing Cubes: I can’t stress enough how much packing cubes have changed my travel game. They keep everything neatly organized and make it super easy to find what you need without digging through your entire bag. Plus, they help compress your clothes, freeing up extra space for souvenirs or those last-minute items.
    2. Distribute Weight Evenly: Trust me, your back will thank you if you balance the weight properly. Place heavier items like shoes and books towards the bottom and closer to the wheels. This way, your backpack won’t tip over, and it’s easier to carry when you need to convert it to a backpack.
    3. Get a backpack cover: Consider getting a luggage protection cover for your Sojourn to make it easier to spot on the luggage carousel.

    Safety Tips for

    Solo Female Travelers

Embarking on solo adventures as a female traveler can be an incredibly empowering experience, but it also comes with its unique set of challenges. As someone who has traversed the globe solo, I understand firsthand the importance of prioritizing safety while exploring unfamiliar territories. From navigating bustling city streets to venturing off the beaten path, every journey as a solo female traveler demands a keen awareness and proactive approach to personal security. In this blog post, I’m excited to share with you some invaluable safety tips garnered from my own experiences, aiming to equip fellow wanderlust-driven women with the confidence and know-how to explore the world on their own terms, safely and securely.

How to stay safe and confident when traveling alone

    Before you go:

    1. Research your destination thoroughly

Before setting foot in a new destination, I make it a priority to dive deep into research. From understanding the local culture and customs to familiarizing myself with potential safety concerns, arming myself with knowledge has always been my first line of defense. Websites like travel groups and blogs provide invaluable insights into what to expect and how to navigate your chosen destination safely.

Knowing which areas to avoid and cultural etiquette can make a world of difference in feeling confident and secure during your travels.

    2. Make sure you never run out of cash

Money matters, especially when you’re on the road. I’ve learned the hard way that running out of cash has led me to uncomfortable situations.

That’s why I always carry a combination of credit cards and back-up cash. So if for whatever reason one credit card stops working, I always have an extra one. I also never leave the house without basic cash.

    3. Pack valuable items in your carry-on

While I heard stories about items stolen from carry-on luaggage it never happend to me. However, I did have items stolen from my checked luggage twice.

    Saftey tips while traveling

    1. Avoid arriving in unfamiliar places late at night: One of the golden rules of solo travel is to plan your arrivals strategically. Arriving in unfamiliar locales during daylight hours ensures better visibility and a greater sense of security.

    2. Be confident, but also have faith and stay open: Confidence is key when exploring new destinations, but it’s equally important to stay open-minded and adaptable. Embrace the unknown with optimism while maintaining a level-headed approach to safety.

    3. Get first-hand local advice and familiarize yourself with common scams: Engage with locals and seek their advice on navigating the area safely. Understanding common scams and tourist traps can help you avoid falling prey to opportunistic individuals.

    4. Make sure you never run out of cash: Always carry sufficient cash reserves in multiple locations to ensure you’re never left stranded without funds.

    5. Always know how you will get back to your accommodation: Whether it’s public transportation, a trusted taxi service, or a prearranged ride, have a clear plan for returning to your accommodation, especially after dark.

    6. Get a local SIM card: Staying connected is essential for safety. Purchase a local SIM card upon arrival to ensure you have access to communication and navigation tools wherever you go.

    7. Dress modestly and respectfully: Respect local customs and traditions by dressing modestly. Not only does this help you blend in, but it also minimizes unwanted attention.

    8. Keep valuable items secure and hidden: Safeguard your passport, money, and electronics by keeping them concealed and secure.

    9. Be mindful of local customs and laws: Research and respect the cultural norms and laws of your destination to avoid unintentional offenses or misunderstandings.

    10. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption: While indulging in the local libations can be tempting, moderation is key, especially when traveling alone.

    11. Be cautious when accepting drinks or invitations: Trust your instincts and exercise caution when accepting invitations or drinks from strangers. When in doubt, politely decline.

    12. Trust your intuition: Your gut instincts are your best ally. If a situation feels off or unsafe, don’t hesitate to remove yourself from it.

    13. Learn key phrases in the local language: Basic language skills can go a long way in facilitating communication and building rapport with locals.

    14. Be discreet with expensive belongings: Minimize the risk of theft by keeping expensive belongings discreet and out of sight.

    15. Use well-lit paths and stay aware of your surroundings: Opt for well-lit and populated areas, especially when navigating unfamiliar streets or neighborhoods.

    16. Be cautious when sharing personal information: Protect your privacy by being selective about the personal information you share with strangers.

    17. Keep important documents in a separate location: Store copies of essential documents like your passport and ID in a secure location separate from your primary belongings.

    18. Use secure locks for your luggage: Invest in sturdy locks to secure your luggage and deter potential theft.

FAQs answered by a solo female traveler

For the past ten years, I have extensively traveled the world by myself and have found it to be incredibly rewarding. I often get the following questions when traveling alone. I hope they might help you!

    K
    L
What was the scariest experience while you traveled?

Being in Colombo during the 2019 easter bombing in Sri Lanka. Shortly after the bombing, the government cut internet communication and social media which left us very confused. The tensions on the streets even a week after the bombing was very tense.

    K
    L
    Have you ever been robbed?

Yes, I have been robbed. Both sitations occured when I against my better knowledge went out walking by myself later at night to get food. Nothing bad happend, I lost about $10 dollars, but I was left with a weird feeling afterwards.

    K
    L
What should I do when I get robbed?

Don't fight it! Just hand over your belongings. Nothing is worth your physical wellbeing.

    K
    L
Isn't traveling off the beaten path more dangerous?

I personally feel like traveling off-the beaten path is much safer than many touristically developed areas. People are generally more open and geniune away from the tourist hotspots.

    K
    L
Do you pay attention to travel advisories?

Honestly, not very much. I obvisouly do read them, but I rely much more on Facebook travel groups and blogs. Some of the countries which have been portrayed as terribly unsafe such as Jamaica, El Salvador and Lebanon turned out to be my favorite countires for solo travel.

Now that I am hooked on the convertible backpacks with wheels, I also wanted to share my thoughts on the two current top contenders on the market: Osprey’s travel backpacks with wheels: the Farpoint and the Sojourn.

As I could find little information on the Osprey Sojourn vs Farpoint, I will share my experiences and insights on these two unique backpacks in this blog post.

Looks & Design: Sojourn vs. Farpoint

    The Design

Both the Farpoint wheeled and Sojourn wheeled come in sleek, modern designs. The Farpoint features a more rectangular shape with clean lines, while the Sojourn has a slightly more curved design.

Both backpacks are made from high-quality materials and exude durability.

Overaöl the Farpoint is slightly more casual than the Sojourn.

    Size Matters

As someone who loves to travel light, I was immediately drawn to the compact size of the Farpoint 36l wheeled and the Sojourn wheeled 40l. The Farpoint measures at 22″ x 14″ x 9″, making it a perfect carry-on size for most airlines.

The Sojourn, on the other hand, is slightly larger at 22″ x 15″ x 8″. While it may not fit in stricter carry-on size restrictions, it still offers plenty of storage space for a week-long trip.

    The next bigger options:

In the bigger sizes, the Farpoint offers 5 L more volume than the Sojourn. Farpoint has 65 l capacity while the Sojourn allows for only 60 liters.

    Weight: Farpoint vs. Sojourn

Weight – which model is lighter?

When it comes to traveling, every pound counts. That’s why I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the Farpoint 36l wheeled is lighter than the Sojourn wheeled 40l by about a pound. This may not seem like much, but when you’re lugging around your backpack for hours on end, every ounce saved makes a difference.

The Farpoint weighs only 6.2 lbs when it comes 65 L packing volume, while the Sojourn’s bigger size (60 L) weighs 8.7 lbs.

    Weight distribution and comfort

One of the key features of these backpacks is their ability to distribute weight evenly, making them comfortable for long hours of wear.

The Sojourn has a lightweight aluminum frame that helps with load distribution. As you can see in the picture, the Sojourn is much broader than the Farpint.

I found that the Farepint does a slightly better job at evenly distributing weight. However, the Sojourn has great compressing features and adjustable straps which also allow for good weight distribution, especially if not fully packed.

Storage: Which backpack offers more space?

    Storage Space

The Farpoint 36l wheeled and Sojourn wheeled 40l may be smaller versions of their bigger counterparts, but they still offer plenty of storage space. The Sojourn has a spacious main compartment with internal compression straps to keep everything in place. It also has a front pocket and a smaller top pocket for quick access items. The Farpoint has a similar setup but offers extra storage space with its detachable daypack.

    Storage Capacity:

One major difference between these two backpacks is their storage capacity. While both are carry-on size with wheel dimensions of 21.3 x 13.8 x 9 inches, the Farpoint only has a capacity of 36 liters while the Soujourn has a larger capacity of 40 liters. This may not seem like a big difference, but when it comes to packing for longer trips or carrying extra gear, those extra four liters can make all the difference.

    Comfort: Sojourn vs. Farpoint

    Comfort and Convenience

One of the main reasons I switched to a backpack with wheels was for the added convenience. The Farpoint 36l wheeled and Sojourn wheeled 40l both feature sturdy, telescopic handles and smooth-rolling wheels that make maneuvering through airports and streets a breeze. They also have comfortable, padded shoulder straps for when I need to carry the backpack on my back.

Ease of Putting It On Your Back:

Both models are relatively easy to convert into a backpack. The process of actually putting it on my back feels more comfortable with the Farpoint. Despite both models having padded straps, the Farpoint’s straps are a bit wider and more comfortable on my shoulders. However, the Soujourn feels more stable and secure once on my back, thanks to its additional hip belt.

On the go: Sojourn vs Farpoint

    Maneuverability:

One of the main selling points of these backpacks is their wheels, and both models have sturdy, smooth-rolling wheels that make navigating through busy airports or city streets a breeze. I did find the Sojourn’s wheels to be a bit smoother and quieter than the Farpoint’s, but overall, both perform well. Due to the bigger size of the wheels, the Osprey Sojourn is easier to maneuver on uneven terrain. The double handle makes the Sojourn much more sturdy when wheeling it.

When wearing them as a backpack

When converting the Sojourn and Farpoint into a backpack, the Sojourn is a bit easier to convert.

The Farpoint is slightly easier to put on your back than the Sojourn.

However, I feel like the Sojourn feels more comfortable when carrying it for 20 minutes or more as it seems to fit my body type better.

So why choose between a backpack or a wheeled suitcase when you can have the best of both worlds with a travel backpack with wheels?

After comparing the Farpoint wheeled and Sojourn wheeled, I decided to get both!

I use the Osprey Sojourn 60 L as my main travel luggage when traveling longer than 2 weeks. I got the Farpoint wheeled backpack in the 36 Liter version for travel of less than two weeks. It gives me the freedom of a backpack and the comfort of a suitcase while still fitting most carry-on restrictions.

Whichever one you choose, Osprey’s quality and attention to detail will ensure that your travels are hassle-free and enjoyable. Happy exploring!

    UV Water bottles reviewed

    What are Self-Cleaning Water Bottles?

Traveling to new and exciting destinations is always an amazing experience, but it also comes with challenges. One such challenge is ensuring access to clean drinking water. As a traveler, you are constantly on the go and may not always have access to safe drinking water. This is where UV water purifiers come in, offering a convenient and effective solution for clean drinking water. I recently switched from a filter bottle to a UV light bottle because my filter kept drying out when I was not using it. And even though I have never fallen sick in years of using the water filter, I was happy to hear that UV water purifier bottles also tackle viruses.

How do UV water bottles work?

UV (ultraviolet) water purifiers use ultraviolet light to eliminate harmful microorganisms from water. These purifiers are portable, compact, and easy to use, making them ideal for travelers. They work by exposing the water to UV rays that penetrate and destroy the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens, rendering them harmless.

UV water bottles vs. Water filters

UV water purifiers and water filters are two popular methods of treating water for safe consumption while traveling. Both have their own unique features and benefits, making it important to understand the differences between the two in order to choose the best option for your travel needs.

Why you should use a uv water water bottle when traveling

    • Safe your wallet and the planet: UV bottles afe you up to at least $5 Dollars per day on bottles water.
    • Portability: Most UV water bottles are designed to be compact and lightweight, making them easy to carry in your backpack or luggage. They take up minimal space and can be used on the go, making them perfect for travelers.
    • No Chemicals: Unlike other water purifying methods, UV does not use any chemicals to treat the water. This means you won’t have to worry about carrying or consuming potentially harmful substances during your travels.
    • Low Maintenance: UV purifiers have few moving parts and do not require frequent filter replacements like other filters. This makes them low-maintenance and cost-effective in the long run.
    • Kills viruses and bacteria: UV light has been proven to be effective in killing viruses and bacteria, including E. coli, salmonella, hepatitis, and rotavirus. This makes it a reliable option for purifying water in areas with these contaminants.
    • Efficiency: UV water purifiers can effectively eliminate up to 99.9% of harmful microorganisms in water, providing you with clean and safe drinking water in about 1 minute
    • Helps to combat plastic pollution: By using a UV water purifier, you can reduce your reliance on single-use plastic water bottles during your travels.
    • Cost efficiency: Compared to buying bottled water, a UV purifier is a more cost-effective option in the pretty short run. The most economical options start at around $40 dollars.
    • Versatile: Some UV purifiers come in the form of a bottle or straw, making them incredibly versatile and easy to use. This means you can purify
    • Reusable: Unlike other water purification methods that require replacement filters or cartridges, a UV water filter is reusable and can be used multiple times without losing its effectiveness.

Water Filters vs. UV Water Bottles

    • Convenience: UV water filter bottles are also highly convenient. They typically come with a built-in filter that does not require any additional parts or maintenance. Simply fill up your bottle with water from a tap, stream, or lake, and the UV light will do its job, making the water safe to drink in just a few minutes. Traditional filters may require additional components, such as the filter itself. I sometimes even had a filter dry out on me while traveling. So, in terms of concenience, UV water bottles are our clear winner!
    • Effectiveness: UV water purifiers and water filters effectively remove harmful bacteria and microorganisms from water. However, UV water purifiers have the added advantage of being able to eliminate viruses as well. So, if you’re traveling to a location where viruses are a concern, UV water purifiers would be the way to go.
    • Cost: In terms of cost, UV water filter bottles may seem more expensive initially, but they can actually save you money in the long run. Traditional purifiers require replacement filters and parts, which can add up over time. UV water filter bottles, on the other hand, have a longer lifespan and do not require replacement filters or parts. As they do not require replacement parts, UV-water bottles win the category cost-effectivness as well.

When are UV water purifiers ineffective?

UV water filters are ineffective against certain contaminants such as chemicals, heavy metals, and sediment. In these cases, a traditional purifier with additional filtration methods may be necessary. It’s essential to research the specific contaminants in the area you’re traveling to and choose a purification method that can effectively remove them. Basically, do not use the UV water purifier if the water is not clear or visibly dirty.

The biggest difference between filters and purifiers is that UV water filters also destroy viruses. However, water filters can also clean murky and unclear water, which a UV water purifier can not.

Self-cleaning bottles vs Filter bottles: Which one is right for me?

If you are more of an outdoors and hiking person, a water filter system is right for you! If you are more like me and stay close to cities (tap water access), most of the time, a UV water purifier is the choice for you!

Factors to consider when choosing an UV water bottle

    1. Battery Life: Consider the battery life of the UV sterilization system. A longer-lasting battery ensures you have access to clean water throughout your travels without frequent recharging.

    2. Water Purification Capacity: Determine the bottle’s water purification capacity, which indicates how much water it can purify on a single charge. This is particularly important for longer journeys.

    3. Bottle Material and Durability: Choose a bottle made from high-quality, durable materials like BPA-free plastics or stainless steel to withstand the rigors of travel and minimize the risk of damage.

    4. Size and Weight: Opt for a compact and lightweight UV bottle that is easy to carry and won’t take up too much space in your luggage or backpack.

    5. Water Filtration Mechanism: Some UV bottles include additional filtration systems to remove particles, sediment, or impurities from the water. Assess whether these features align with your needs.

    6. Ease of Use: Ensure that the bottle is user-friendly with straightforward instructions for activation, sterilization, and filling. The bottle’s design should also facilitate comfortable drinking.

    7. Water Flow and Mouthpiece Design: Evaluate how water flows from the bottle and whether the mouthpiece design provides a pleasant drinking experience without leakage or spills.

    8. Rechargeability Options: Determine how the UV bottle is recharged—whether it uses a USB port, solar power, or other methods. A variety of charging options can be advantageous for travelers.

    9. UV Safety Features: Check for safety features, such as automatic shut-off when the bottle is opened or tilted, to prevent UV exposure to your eyes or skin.

    10. Cost and Replacement Parts: Consider the initial cost of the UV bottle and the availability and cost of replacement UV lamps or components, as these may need to be replaced periodically.

    11. Warranty and Customer Support: Research the manufacturer’s warranty and the availability of customer support in case of issues or concerns during your travels.

    12. Design and Aesthetics: While not a top priority, the bottle’s design and aesthetics may influence your choice, especially if you prefer a particular style or color.

    13. User Reviews: Read user reviews and ratings to get insights from fellow travelers who have used the UV bottle in real-world scenarios.
