Self cleaning bottles vs Water filters Reviewed

Self cleaning water bottles

UV Water bottles reviewed

What are Self-Cleaning Water Bottles?

Traveling to new and exciting destinations is always an amazing experience, but it also comes with challenges. One such challenge is ensuring access to clean drinking water. As a traveler, you are constantly on the go and may not always have access to safe drinking water. This is where UV water purifiers come in, offering a convenient and effective solution for clean drinking water. I recently switched from a filter bottle to a UV light bottle because my filter kept drying out when I was not using it. And even though I have never fallen sick in years of using the water filter, I was happy to hear that UV water purifier bottles also tackle viruses.

How do self-cleaning water bottles work?

UV (ultraviolet) water purifiers use ultraviolet light to eliminate harmful microorganisms from water. These purifiers are portable, compact, and easy to use, making them ideal for travelers. They work by exposing the water to UV rays that penetrate and destroy the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens, rendering them harmless.

UV water Purifiers vs. Water filters

UV water purifiers and water filters are two popular methods of treating water for safe consumption while traveling. Both have their own unique features and benefits, making it important to understand the differences between the two in order to choose the best option for your travel needs.

Why you should use a water purifier when traveling

  • Portable: Most UV water purifiers are designed to be compact and lightweight, making them easy to carry in your backpack or luggage. They take up minimal space and can be used on the go, making them perfect for travelers.
  • No Chemicals: Unlike other water purifying methods, UV does not use any chemicals to treat the water. This means you won’t have to worry about carrying or consuming potentially harmful substances during your travels.
  • Low Maintenance: UV purifiers have few moving parts and do not require frequent filter replacements like other filters. This makes them low-maintenance and cost-effective in the long run.
  • Kills viruses and bacteria: UV light has been proven to be effective in killing viruses and bacteria, including E. coli, salmonella, hepatitis, and rotavirus. This makes it a reliable option for purifying water in areas with these contaminants.
  • Efficiency: UV water purifiers can effectively eliminate up to 99.9% of harmful microorganisms in water, providing you with clean and safe drinking water in about 1 minute
  • Helps to combat plastic pollution: By using a UV water purifier, you can reduce your reliance on single-use plastic water bottles during your travels.
  • Cost efficiency: Compared to buying bottled water, a UV purifier is a more cost-effective option in the pretty short run. The most economical options start at around $40 dollars.
  • Versatile: Some UV purifiers come in the form of a bottle or straw, making them incredibly versatile and easy to use. This means you can purify
  • Reusable: Unlike other water purification methods that require replacement filters or cartridges, a UV purifier is reusable and can be used multiple times without losing its effectiveness.

Water Filters vs. UV Purifiers

  • Convenience: UV water filter bottles are also highly convenient. They typically come with a built-in filter that does not require any additional parts or maintenance. Simply fill up your bottle with water from a tap, stream, or lake, and the UV light will do its job, making the water safe to drink in just a few minutes. Traditional filters may require additional components, such as the filter itself. I sometimes even had a filter dry out on me while traveling.
  • Effectiveness: UV water purifiers and water filters effectively remove harmful bacteria and microorganisms from water. However, UV water purifiers have the added advantage of being able to eliminate viruses as well. So, if you’re traveling to a location where viruses are a concern, UV water purifiers would be the way to go.
  • Cost: In terms of cost, UV water filter bottles may seem more expensive initially, but they can actually save you money in the long run. Traditional purifiers require replacement filters and parts, which can add up over time. UV water filter bottles, on the other hand, have a longer lifespan and do not require replacement filters or parts.

When are UV water purifiers ineffective?

UV water filters are ineffective against certain contaminants such as chemicals, heavy metals, and sediment. In these cases, a traditional purifier with additional filtration methods may be necessary. It’s essential to research the specific contaminants in the area you’re traveling to and choose a purification method that can effectively remove them. Basically, do not use the UV water purifier if the water is not clear or visibly dirty.

Make a decision based on your travel style

The biggest difference between filters and purifiers is that UV water filters also destroy viruses. However, water filters can also clean murky and unclear water, which a UV water purifier can not.

Self-cleaning bottles vs Filter bottles: Which one is right for me?

If you are more of an outdoors and hiking person, a water filter system is right for you! If you are more like me and stay close to cities (tap water access), most of the time, a UV water purifier is the choice for you!

Packing tips for carry-on luggage

How to pack for carry-on only

Travel freer, cheaper and hastle free

When it comes to traveling, I’ve become a pro at packing just a carry-on, even for those long trips. After my bag got lost during a two-month adventure in Trinidad and Tobago, I decided to ditch the hassle of checked luggage whenever possible.

And let me tell you, there are some major perks to having just carry-on luggage. No more waiting at baggage claim, no more circling around the carousel, and, most importantly, no more extra costs for checking in a bag. It’s all about that freedom!

Avoiding lost luggage is right at the top of my list when it comes to reasons for ditching checked bags.

With each trip I take, I learn a bunch of helpful things that I can apply to my next adventure. Trust me, there’s a lot to think about, whether you’re packing for carry-on or checked bags. The airlines seem to be tightening the screws when it comes to heavy suitcases, especially on international flights. But don’t worry, I’ve got you covered with some awesome tricks up my sleeve. By following these packing tips, you’ll be less likely to forget important items and can focus on enjoying your travels.

Research Airline Policies and Size/Weight Limits

The first step in packing efficiently is to research airline policies and size/weight limits. Every airline has different policies regarding carry-on luggage, so it's important to check their websites for specific restrictions. Additionally, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has regulations for prohibited items, so make sure to review those as well. Knowing these policies can help prevent your bag from being rejected at the airport.

Invest in a lightweight, quality bag

Investing in a quality, sustainable, and lightweight bag is crucial for efficient packing. When searching for a bag, look for durable materials and sturdy construction. Consider size and weight for easy maneuverability. Explore different styles and features, such as expandable compartments or removable straps. Remember that a quality bag is a long-term investment that will save you time and money in the future.

The biggest decision to make when choosing your carry-on luggage is whether you want a backpack or a piece of luggage with wheels.

Me laying my clothes ou

Spread everything out

Before packing spread everything out and look at it again the next day. This technique helps me to see if I have forgotten something. Also, usually, it helps me eliminate unnecessary stuff. When unsure what to choose, always opt for the more lightweight option!

Create a packing list

Packing for a trip can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to deciding what to bring in your carry-on. Creating a packing list is one of the most important steps in efficient packing. Determine essential items based on your itinerary, climate, and local culture. But with so many things to consider, where do you even start?

First, make a list of everything you absolutely need, such as your passport, phone charger, and any necessary medication.

Consider multi-purpose items to decrease the amount of clothing needed, so think about versatile outfits that can be mixed and matched.

A packing list not only helps organize your thoughts but also prevents overpacking.

Pack efficiently

Now that you have your packing list, it's time to pack efficiently.

1. Utilize rolling techniques to save space and prevent wrinkles.

2. Use packing cubes or compression bags to further maximize space.

3. Avoid packing bulky items that take up valuable room in your bag.

4. Keep in mind that liquid items are not allowed in bigger sizes. Face and Hair products in the shapes of bars will go a long way!

5. Remember to pack the items you will need during the flight at the top of your bag, such as your passport, boarding pass, and headphones.

Use the pillowcase trick

I use the pillow case trick to bring my spare outfits in my carry on

First, stuff all your clothes into the zippered pillowcase. Then, cover it with a regular pillowcase. Voila! Not only do you free up space in your bag for other essentials, but you also have a cozy pillow to sleep on during your flight. Plus, remember all those extra outfits you thought you couldn't bring? With this hack, you can bring them along too!

What makes this hack even better is that most airlines don't consider a pillow as a carry-on item. So you can enjoy all the perks without any worries. Try it out and pack like a pro on your next adventure!

Packing cubes

Organize Items within the Bag

Organizing items within the bag is the final step in efficient packing. Take advantage of pockets and compartments for easy access to important items. Consider using packing cubes to group items by category or outfit. Use a luggage tag to clearly identify your bag. Organizing your bag not only makes it easy to find what you need but also saves you time and frustration.

Pack it and try it!

To make sure you did not overpack I highly recommend packing everything one day prior and actually putting everything in your backpack. I have overpacked so many time and ended up being stressed by reducing stuff last minute.

Have Fun!

Backpacking is all about having an adventure and exploring the unknown so don't let packing overwhelm you and take away from your fun. With these tips, you can have your backpack

The best mini flat iron for travel

The best mini flat iron for travel

Cordless straighteners &. Mini Flat Irons

Review

As a frequent traveler, I struggle to keep my hair sleek and styled while on the go. I am super bad with hair updos or stylings, so I usually opt for the straightener when I return home. However, bringing my flat iron when I am traveling has often proved to be inefficient. It is bulky, and I experienced difficulties with the voltage.
I am excited to share some of the best mini-flat irons for travelers.
These compact hair straighteners are perfect for packing your carry-on luggage or even your purse. They take up minimal space and are lightweight, making them convenient for any trip. One of the main benefits of mini flat irons is their versatility. Not only can they be used for straightening hair, but they can also create curls and waves. Meaning you don’t have to pack multiple styling tools for different looks.

Cordless vs. Mini flat irons

About cordless straighteners

Cordless straighteners are perfect for on-the-go touch-ups without the hassle of finding an outlet. They often come with a USB charger, making it easy to charge them anywhere. A disadvantage of cordless straighteners is that they may hold less heat than regular mini-flat irons. If you have thick or coarse hair, straightening your locks may take a bit longer.

+ give you complete freedom

+ easy to pack and carry

– shot battery span

– less efficient than mini flat irons

About mini flat irons

On the other hand, regular mini flat irons are more powerful and can reach higher temperatures. This makes them more suitable for thick or curly hair types. They also usually come with a heat-resistant pouch, making them safe for packing after use. Mini hair straighteners also typically come with dual voltage options, making them suitable for international travel. However, they require an electrical outlet and may be bulkier than cordless.

+ reach higher temperatures

+ better for curly hair

– you’ll still need an outlet

Since my long hair easily gives in to heat treatment I am completly fine using a cordless straightner and love the flexibility it gives me!

Dyson Corrale Cord-Free straightener benefits

The famous hair tools from Dyson are known for their impressive technology and high price tags. The newest addition to their lineup is the Corrale straighteners, which offer a unique and clever hair styling experience.
When testing the Corrale, we noticed something different – the process feels a little like running it over tangled hair, but fear not, it’s just the plates gathering and aligning your hair for a flawless finish. The straight results also stay in place, giving you long-lasting style.
While the battery lasts 30 minutes, which may not be enough for those with curly, thick, or long hair, the Corrale has a solution. It can be used while plugged in and charging, ensuring you never run out of power.
The only downside is that the Corrale is quite heavy and offers no space-saving or weight-saving benefits for travel. It’s better suited for use at a distance from a power source rather than on the go.
With a price tag of just under $400, the Corrale is the most expensive cordless model in its class. However, if you value cool technology and the cost is within your budget, these straighteners are worth considering.

GHD Unplugged Cordless benefits

I am using the GHD at home and absolutely love it. The unplugged cordless version is just as impressive, if not better. It has a compact design and can reach up to 365°F, perfect for touch-ups or quick styling on the go. The straightener also has a heat-resistant carrying case and a USB charging cable.
It is 22cm long and easily fits into a chic case that matches the styler. The charger is small and will only take up a little space in your luggage.
While the plates are small, I found that a few passes through a section of hair is all it takes to achieve sleek, straight results. And with the option to charge via USB, you can power up from your laptop or any other device.

The handle even has a battery indicator to track how much juice is left.
However, it’s important to note that a single charge only lasts for around 20 minutes, which is slightly less than average for cordless straighteners. For those with long or curly hair, these straighteners may be better suited for refreshing or touch-ups rather than full styling sessions. But regarding portability and straightening power, the GHD Unplugged is my clear winner.

Period Hacks for travelers

Period Hacks for travelers

How to handle your period while traveling

Travel Pro Tips

Traveling, for many of us is an escape from our everyday lives – a chance to explore new cultures, discover incredible cuisines, and take in breathtaking scenery. But sometimes when we’re on these journeys, reality can catch up with us – and that includes dealing with your period while traveling. Don’t worry though! Having your cycle while traveling doesn’t have to be daunting or uncomfortable. In this blog post, I’ll share tried-and-tested hacks so you can navigate the unique challenges of staying comfortable and cared for during your period while traveling – so you can focus on having the adventure of a lifetime!

When you get your period while traveling, it’s important to be prepared – that means packing the right products. When choosing which items to bring with you, it’s important to keep in mind where you will be staying, your planned activities, and (of course) the environment!

Your cycle might change

As someone who loves to travel, I know firsthand that it can be both exciting and stressful. But one thing that often goes unmentioned is how it can affect your period. I've experienced it myself - jet lag, changing time zones, and different sleeping patterns can all throw off your normal cycle. It can be frustrating, even alarming at times. That's why it's so important to be prepared.

Be extra prepared!

When I know I will be traveling I put a tampon in each bag I will be bringing with me just to be safe. Because infrastructure and waste management are an issue in many destinations you should bring some eco-friendly period products that are compostable or biodegradable.

Flying while on your period

When I know I'll be on my period during an international flight, I always opt for the safest option: either a menstrual dis and period underwear or just period underwear. I always also bring pain relief just to be more comfortable. Personally, I love to bring a heat patch for international flights while on my period.

Bring the right products

Make sure that you have tried and tested the period products you plan on bringing. Often it is worth trying new products and it is much easier in the comfort of your own home. Here are my favorite tried and tested period products for traveling.

Packing cubes

Menstruation disc

I recently switched to using a menstruation disc instead of regular tampons. I am absolutely in love with using the disc and can only full-heartedly recommend it to anyone. For once, I love that I do not have to worry about the trash or disposing of the products. Secondly, wearing a disk is so much more comfortable than a cup or tampons! I can not feel it all while it lasts for at least 12 hours even during my heavy day. Thirdly, it is super easy to handle once you get used to it. Making it the perfect companion even when you cannot wash your hands directly after. And finally, it is way less to pack than a whole bunch of tampons!

period underwear

Period underwear

I have long been using them at home and shied away from packing them when traveling. That definitely changed after I tried and tested washing them by hand. Now I always bring at least two on each trip I go on.

eco friendly tampons

Eco-friendly period products

Make sure to always carry some products with you, just in case!

Be aware of different customs

Before heading out on your next adventure, make sure to do some research regarding the cultural norms surrounding periods in the country you’ll be visiting. Being aware of any taboos will help ensure a smooth trip! For example, you are not supposed to adhere to the traditional Sabbath celebrations of Rastafarais, etc. In parts of Africa and South America it is taboo to talk about your period.

Research alternative products

Many countries have their own menstrual care products, so research this before leaving! For example, India has a range of Ayurvedic-based products that you can purchase and use while traveling. This could be the perfect opportunity to try something new!

Availability

Travel backpacks with wheels

Review

After ten years of traveling the world, I am not the typical budget backpacker anymore; I still love the independence and freedom a backpack gives me. However, I often got frustrated with carrying it and putting it on and off, especially at airports.

So last year, I switched from a regular backpack for women with 50 Liters volume to a travel backpack with wheels.

I am super happy with my choice and the increased comfort I have while still maintaining flexibility and freedom.

A travel backpack with wheels is right for you if:

– Love being independent and flexible while traveling

– Need a bag with superior protection, generous storage space, and an effortless carrying experience.

– Want to keep weight of your back

– Don’t plan on carrying the backpack on hikes

– Need a more sophisticated-looking option to a regular backpack

A travel backpack with wheels is not right for you if:

– You want to carry it on longer hikes

Here is my personal review of the current travel backpacks with wheels on the market.

Pros and Cons of travel backpacks with wheels

Advantages of traveling with a wheeled backpack

The weight is off your shoulders

The main advantage of having is wheeled backpack is by far the ability to move it without putting it on your back.

Comfort at the airport

I find wheeled backpacks to be the best companion when moving around airports and bus stations. Say goodbye to putting up and down the backpack for short periods and hello to comfortable lines!

Backpacks with wheels combine the best of both worlds

By still having straps to carry and maneuver the backpack yourself, wheeled backpacks give you the comfort and ease of a suitcase and the flexibility of a backpack!

Disadvantages of a backpack with wheels

The wheels don’t run as smoothly

Compared to a regular suitcase, the wheels don’t run as smoothly and are not as easy to maneuver.

Straps are less comfortable

Obviously, the straps are made to be stored away easily; therefore, most wheeled backpacks are just not as comfortable to carry or put on your back.

Backpacks with wheels are heavier

The integration of the wheels makes your backpack a lot heavier. While the regular 65L backpack weighs around 1kg, a wheeled backpack easily weighs around 2,45 kg.

Wheeled backpacks are the ideal indepandant travelers who want to be a bit more comfortable while still being flexible. However, backpacks with wheels are not the go-to choice if you plan on hiking with the it.

Carry on backpacks with wheels

I decided to try a carry-on back with wheels after realizing that my office and electronics make my bag pretty heavy. I started to dread carrying it around on longer layovers.

The Tropicfeel Lift Rollerbag 40L is the newest addition to my luggage collection, and so far, I absolutely love it. With its expandable capacity from 40L to 52L, this bag can carry everything I need and even more. I have now used it twice on carry-on luggage-only trips and it worked great! It makes airports and organizations easy-breezy with its well-thought-out compartments. This versatile carry-on can handle the road no matter how challenging the journey.

Plus, converting it from a roller bag to a backpack is done in just seconds! Also, its durable and sustainable design helps me save space.

Samsonite Ecodiver is a travel backpack with wheels that almost feels like a regular suitcase. However, when needed, it is easily converted into a backpack. I didn’t find it super comfortable to carry as the above options and rather made for short periods of carrying it.

Its Recyclex™ textiles have been coated with a water-repellent finish.

I love that the exterior fabric and zippers are crafted from post-consumer recycled PET, while the black trim is made from 100% recycled industrial waste Nylon as part of our Recyclex™ Material Technology Initiative.

Packing tips for carry-on luggage

When it comes to traveling, I’ve become a pro at packing just a carry-on, even for those long trips. After my bag got lost during a two-month adventure in Trinidad and Tobago, I decided to ditch the hassle of checked luggage whenever possible.

Backpack or suitcase?

When it comes to traveling, there are many different options to choose from. One of the most important decisions you’ll have to make is whether to bring a backpack or a suitcase. Both have their own pros and cons, which we will discuss in this blog post. So, which one is right for you?

Advantages of traveling with a suitcase

Suitcases are easier to roll

Rolling suitcases are much easier and more comfortable than carrying a backpack. This can be very useful if you are traveling with heavy gear or need to carry a lot of clothes.

Suitcases offer better protection

Because suitcases have solid sides, they offer more protection for fragile items like electronics and jewelry. If you are planning a trip across multiple continents, this could be an important factor to consider.

Suitcases are more formal

If you are traveling for business or need to look presentable at your destination, a suitcase might be the better option. Suitcases can give off a more professional image than backpacks, depending on where you’re headed.

Disadvantages of a suitcase

Suitcases are bulky and difficult to store them in tight spaces

If you are traveling to a crowded city or to more rustic environments, I find that suitcases can be too big and unwieldy. This makes them difficult to lug around on buses, boats, or in busy streets.

Suitcases are harder to maneuver on uneven terrain

I love beach huts, tree houses and don’t mind more rustic places. A suitcase is super hard to bring to this kind of unique accommodation. As an independent traveler, I hate being unable to carry my luggage alone.

The difficultity of handling a suitcase by myself or when on public transport is an absolut no-go for me and the reason why I’ll always opt for a backpack.

Disadvantages of a backpack

Backpacks are harder to pack

Keeping your stuff organized and wrinkle-free can be somewhat of a hassle and took me years of optimization. But once you figured it all out, it shouldn’t be a problem anymore. Check out my guide on how to pack like a pro to make sure you travel as comfortably as possible.

Backpacks are less formal

Traveling with a backpack may look out of place if you are checking into a more sophisticated place

Your stuff is less protected

Naturally, the hard shell of a suitcase protects your clothes better from outside influences.

The process of putting it on your back

Putting your backpack on is uncomfortable. I’m not too fond of the process of putting it on my back.

Backpacking can damage your clothes

Carrying a 10-kilo backpack is no joke on the clothes you are wearing at that moment. I ruined some tops with my backpack

Advantages of traveling with a backpack

Keep your hands free

When you are carrying a backpack, both of your hands are free. This can be very useful when you need to carry other things like your camera, or if you need to use your hands for balance when walking.

Easy to handle

Backpacks can be squashed into small spaces more easily than suitcases. This can be useful if you are traveling on public transport or trying to fit your luggage into a small car or boat.

Flexibility

Backpacks are so much easier to carry when the path is uneven or sandy. This is perfect for traveling in remote areas where there are no roads or sidewalks. Just picturing myself fighting with a suitcase when accessing a lonely beach hut makes me burst with laughter.

Independence

I am not fond of carrying my luggage for hours, but with my backpack at least I would be able to do it!

Outside storage

One of the best things about backpacking is that you can strap large items outside of your backpack. This allows you to carry more gear with you or keep smelly and wet things out.

By using a backpack with wheels I enjoy the flexibility and independence of a backpacker while the wheels litteraly take the weight of my shoulders.

Ultimately, the decision to travel with a suitcase or a backpack depends on your own preferences and the type of trip you are taking. If you are traveling for business, a suitcase is often preferable, but if you’re looking for more adventure, then a backpack will likely be your best bet. I think there are more pros than cons to traveling with a backpack. Especially when you pack them right. It’s been my experience that they are more versatile, can fit into tighter spaces, and make it easier to move around on foot. Of course, there are some drawbacks- like the fact that they can be cumbersome when full or heavy- but overall I prefer a backpack (especially with wheels) to suitcases.
