Best Carry-On for Women: Top Picks for Stylish & Practical Travel

Best carry-on

for women
Traveling light doesn’t mean sacrificing style or convenience. The right carry-on bag can be a game-changer, keeping your essentials organized and your journey stress-free. Whether you’re packing for a quick weekend getaway or gearing up for a long-haul adventure, finding the perfect carry-on can elevate your travel experience. In this post, we’ll explore what makes a great carry-on bag and how to choose one that’s as practical as it is stylish.

What to Look For in the perfect carry-on

Fit Matters

Ever tried to jam an oversized bag into an overhead bin while everyone in line behind you sighs? Same. That’s why it’s so important to choose a carry-on that meets airline size regulations. But it’s not just about fitting into the plane—it’s about fitting into your travel style. A compact yet spacious bag lets you pack everything you need without feeling weighed down, making security checks and boarding a breeze.

Lightweight is Everything

Let’s face it: carrying heavy carry on is a workout no one signed up for. A lightweight bag makes all the difference, especially if you’re navigating through busy airports or hoisting it into an overhead compartment. Plus, a lighter carry on means you can pack more of what matters—whether that’s an extra pair of shoes or your favorite snacks—without worrying about weight restrictions.

Match It to Your Travel Style

Your carry-on bag should fit how you travel. Are you a minimalist who thrives with a sleek backpack for hands-free convenience? Or maybe you’re a chronic over-packer who needs the structure of a hardside suitcase with wheels. Prioritize safety features if you’re heading to a busy destination—anti-theft zippers or RFID-blocking compartments can be lifesavers. The right bag isn’t just functional; it complements your travel vibe and keeps your journey stress-free.

Smart Organization

Nothing is more frustrating than digging through your bag to find your passport when you’re already running late. Carry-ons with multiple compartments make it easy to stay organized. Separate spaces for your laptop, snacks, chargers, and travel documents mean everything has a home—and you’ll always know exactly where to find it.

Build for life

Nothing ruins a trip faster than a broken zipper or a cracked suitcase shell. Trust me, I’ve been there. That’s why durability is non-negotiable. Look for materials like ballistic nylon, which resists wear and tear, or polycarbonate, which can handle being tossed around by baggage handlers. A reliable bag is an investment that pays off trip after trip, adventure after adventure.

Packing Tips for carry-on luggage

1. Roll Instead of Folding

Rolling your clothes is a game-changer for saving space and reducing wrinkles. This technique lets you pack more efficiently, especially for bulkier items like jackets and jeans. Plus, it’s easier to see all your clothes at a glance when unpacking.

2. Use Packing Cubes for Easy Organization

Packing cubes are a must-have for staying organized. Group similar items—like toiletries, electronics, and undergarments—into separate cubes for quick access. Color-coded or labeled cubes make it even easier to find what you need without rummaging through your bag.

3. Layer Strategically

Place heavier items like shoes at the bottom of your carry-on to maintain balance. Delicate or frequently used items, like chargers or travel documents, should go on top for easy retrieval.

4. Fill Every Nook and Cranny

Maximize every inch of space by stuffing socks or small accessories inside shoes. This not only saves room but also helps maintain the shape of your shoes during travel.

5. Prioritize Multipurpose Items

Pack clothing and accessories that can serve multiple purposes. A scarf can double as a blanket or a fashion piece, and neutral-colored clothing can mix and match easily.

6. Use Compression Bags for Bulkier Items

For jackets or thick sweaters, compression bags can reduce their volume significantly. These are especially useful for winter travel or trips requiring heavier clothing.

7. Keep Essentials in a Separate Pouch

Create a small “essentials” pouch for items like lip balm, hand sanitizer, snacks, and a charging cable. Having these items in a single, easily accessible spot can save you time and hassle during your journey.

8. Limit Liquids to the Basics

Avoid overpacking toiletries by sticking to travel-sized essentials. Use refillable containers for shampoo, lotion, and other liquids to stay within TSA guidelines while reducing waste.

9. Invest in a Lightweight Toiletry Bag

Choose a toiletry bag with multiple compartments to keep items organized and prevent spills. Hanging toiletry bags are particularly useful in small hotel bathrooms.

10. Pack Strategically for Security Checks

Keep items you’ll need at security, like electronics and liquids, near the top of your bag for quick access. This will help you breeze through the process and avoid repacking chaos.

How to choose the right compression cube set

Materials Matter: Choosing the Right Fabric for Your Needs

Let me tell you a quick story. During a trip Tobago during rainy season, I learned the hard way that not all packing cubes are created equal. My non-waterproof cubes left me with a suitcase full of damp clothes – not fun!

Since then, I've become a bit of a fabric nerd. For most trips, I swear by ripstop nylon. It's lightweight, durable, and can handle a bit of moisture. But if you're heading somewhere super wet or planning any boat trips, go for fully waterproof cubes. Trust me, your dry socks will thank you later!

Size Guide: Selecting the Perfect Compression Cube Set

Here's a pro tip I've picked up over the years: mix and match cube sizes! I typically use a large cube for bulky items like sweaters, medium cubes for shirts and pants, and small cubes for underwear and socks.

Compression Cubes for Different Types of Travel

Whether you're a rugged backpacker or a luxury jet-setter, there's a compression cube system for you. For my backpacking trips, I love the lightweight, no-frills options. But when I'm doing the business traveler thing, I opt for sleeker, more professional-looking cubes.

Family travelers, listen up! Color-coded cube sets are a godsend. No more mixing up your kids' clothes.

Compression packing cubes – tips from a pro

Packing Techniques to Maximize Compression Cube Efficiency

Alright, let’s talk technique. After years of experimentation, I’m firmly in the rolling camp. It not only saves space but also reduces wrinkles. My go-to method is to roll outfits together – a shirt, pants, and socks all in one neat little bundle.

Oh, and here’s a trick I picked up in Japan – place a sheet of tissue paper between delicate items before rolling. It works wonders for preventing wrinkles!

Maintenance and Care: Extending the Life of Your Compression Cubes

I’ve had some of my compression cubes for years now, and they’re still going strong. The secret? A little TLC goes a long way. I always air them out after a trip and give them a gentle wash if needed.

Beyond Clothes: Creative Uses for Compression Packing Cubes

Compression cubes aren’t just for clothes! On a recent tech-heavy trip to Silicon Valley, I used a small cube to organize all my cables and chargers. Game changer!

And let me tell you, these cubes are lifesavers for dirty laundry. No more stinking up your whole suitcase with that post-party shirt!

How to Use Compression Packing Cubes

How to Use Compression Packing Cubes

Compression Cubes

Yay or Nay?

Have you ever struggled to fit everything into your suitcase? You’re not alone! A mind-boggling 57% of travelers admit to overpacking, but there’s a game-changing solution: compression packing cubes. These nifty tools can revolutionize your packing game, and I’m here to show you how! As a seasoned traveler who’s circled the globe more times than I can count, I’ve mastered the art of packing light.

Trust me, once you learn how to use compression packing cubes, you’ll wonder how you ever traveled without them. Ready to become a packing pro?

What are compression cubes?

So, what exactly are compression packing cubes? They’re like the superhero version of regular packing cubes. Imagine a zippered fabric container that not only organizes your clothes but also squishes them down to a fraction of their original size. It’s like having a mini vacuum sealer for your clothes, minus the need for any fancy equipment.

Why use compression packing cubes?

The purpose of these magical cubes is twofold: organization and space-saving. And boy, do they deliver on both fronts! I used to be the kind of traveler who’d throw everything into my suitcase and hope for the best.

But compression cubes changed all that. They give each item a designated spot, making it easy to find what you need without turning your suitcase into a disaster zone. Plus, the compression feature means you can pack more without upgrading to a bigger suitcase. Win-win!

Compression cubes vs regular packing cubes

Now, you might be wondering how these differ from regular packing cubes. Well, I’ve used both, and while regular cubes are great for organization, compression cubes take it to the next level.

Regular cubes are like helpful organizers, but compression cubes are like organizers with superpowers. They have an extra zipper that, when closed, compresses the contents, squeezing out excess air and reducing the overall volume.

I learned this the hard way on a trip to South America. I’d packed my regular cubes to the brim, feeling pretty smug about my organization skills.

But by the end of the trip, I’d accumulated so many souvenirs that I had to sit on my backpack to close it. If I’d had compression cubes, I could’ve easily made room for that extra pair of shoes I definitely didn’t need but bought anyway.

Benefits of compression packing cubes

The benefits of using compression packing cubes for travel are pretty sweet.

1. You can pack more in less space.

This is a game-changer for chronic overpackers like myself. I once managed to fit a week’s worth of clothes into a carry-on thanks to these bad boys. My back thanked me for not lugging around a heavy checked bag.

2. They keep your clothes wrinkle-free.

I used to arrive at my destination looking like I’d slept in my clothes (sometimes I had, airport floors aren’t comfy). But with compression cubes, my outfits stay pretty neat and tidy.

3.  They make unpacking a breeze.

Instead of dumping everything out and creating a clothes mountain, you can simply transfer your cubes to drawers. It’s like having a portable dresser. This was a lifesaver during a hectic business trip where I was changing hotels every night.

How to pack compression packing cubes

1. Roll your clothes

Let’s start with advanced folding methods. Now, I know what you’re thinking – “folding is folding, right?” Wrong! The key to maximum compression is all in the technique. My go-to method is what I call the “burrito roll.” Start by laying your clothes flat, then fold in the sides, and roll tightly from one end to the other. It’s like making a clothing burrito, minus the guac (trust me, guac and clothes don’t mix – learned that the hard way).

For items like dress shirts, I’ve found that the military roll works wonders. Lay the shirt face-down, fold in the sides, then roll from the bottom up. It’s like creating a tiny shirt sausage that fits perfectly in your cube. And bonus – it helps reduce wrinkles too!

Mix cube sizes

Now, let’s talk about mixing cube sizes. This is where things get interesting. I used to just throw everything into the largest cube I had, but that’s a rookie mistake. The key is to use a variety of sizes strategically. I typically use larger cubes for bulky items like sweaters or jeans, medium cubes for t-shirts and pants, and smaller cubes for underwear and socks.

Don’t overpack

One thing to keep in mind, though – don’t go overboard with the compression. I once got a bit too enthusiastic and compressed my cubes so much that I couldn’t fit them all in my suitcase. Turns out, there is such a thing as too efficient!

In a nutshell, compression packing cubes are like the Marie Kondo of travel accessories. They spark joy by keeping you organized, maximizing space, and making packing (and unpacking) a whole lot easier. Trust me, once you try them, you’ll wonder how you ever traveled without them. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go reorganize my travel gear. Again.

10 Must-Have Features in a Women’s Travel Backpack

10 Must-Have Features in a Women’s Travel Backpack

Shopping guide: Travel Backpacks

for Woman

As a seasoned globetrotter myself, I understand the importance of having the right gear by your side. And when it comes to packing for your next expedition, choosing the perfect travel backpack is a decision that should not be taken lightly.

For women, in particular, selecting a backpack specifically designed with their needs in mind can make all the difference in the world. It’s not about limiting options or promoting gender stereotypes; it’s about recognizing that our bodies and preferences vary, and having a backpack that aligns with those differences can enhance our travel experience in numerous ways.

In this blog post, I will take you on a journey through the world of travel backpacks tailored for women. We’ll explore why it’s essential for women to opt for these specially designed backpacks and how they can elevate your travel game to new heights.

What to look out for in a travel bakpack

1. Ergonomic Design

When it comes to women's travel backpacks, one size definitely doesn't fit all. A well-designed women's backpack takes into account the typically smaller frame and different body shape of women.

  • Adjustable Shoulder Straps: Look for straps that can be easily adjusted to fit your torso length. They should be well-padded and contoured to fit comfortably over your chest.
  • Sternum Strap: This small strap across your chest helps distribute weight evenly and prevents the shoulder straps from slipping.
  • Hip Belt: A padded hip belt transfers weight to your hips, reducing strain on your shoulders and back. Ensure it's adjustable and sits comfortably on your hips, not your waist.

I once traveled with Lauri's unisex backpack and suffered from constant back pain. Switching back to my women-specific design with an adjustable hip belt was a game-changer for my comfort.

Osprey Sojourn with wheels: back view

2. Comfortable Back Panel

Long days of exploration can lead to a sweaty, uncomfortable back if your backpack doesn't have proper ventilation.

  • Padded Back Panel: Look for thick, soft padding to cushion your back against the contents of your pack.
  • Breathable Material: Mesh or other breathable fabrics help wick away moisture and improve airflow.
  • Suspended Mesh System: Some high-end backpacks feature a suspended mesh back panel that creates an air channel between your back and the pack, maximizing ventilation.

3. Multiple Compartments

Organization is key when you're living out of a backpack. Multiple compartments help you keep your belongings tidy and easily accessible.

  • Main Compartment: Should be spacious enough for clothes and larger items.
  • Smaller Pockets: Look for a mix of internal and external pockets for items like passports, phones, and snacks.
  • Dirty Laundry Compartment: A separate section for dirty clothes keeps odors contained and clean clothes fresh.

4. Laptop Sleeve

In our digital age, a dedicated laptop compartment is crucial for many travelers.

  • Padded Protection: The sleeve should be well-padded to protect your device from bumps and drops.
  • Optimal Positioning: Ideally, the laptop compartment should be close to your back for better weight distribution.
  • Appropriate Size: Ensure the sleeve can accommodate your specific laptop model.

5. Security Features

Safety is a top priority, especially for solo female travelers. Look for backpacks with built-in security features.

  • Hidden Pockets: Concealed compartments for valuables like cash and passports.
  • Lockable Zippers: Allow you to secure your main compartments with a small padlock.
  • Slash-Proof Material: Some backpacks feature a wire mesh integrated into the fabric to prevent slash-and-grab theft.

The hidden pocket in my backpack has saved me more than once. It's perfect for storing extra cash and my passport, giving me peace of mind in crowded areas.

6. Water Resistance

Weather can be unpredictable, so protecting your belongings from the elements is crucial.

  • Water-Resistant Fabric: Look for materials like treated nylon or polyester that repel light rain.
  • Rain Cover: Some backpacks come with a built-in rain cover, or you can purchase one separately for heavy downpours.
  • Waterproof Zippers: These provide an extra layer of protection against water seepage.

7. Durability

A travel backpack is an investment, so durability is key for long-term use and value.

  • High-Quality Fabrics: Materials like ripstop nylon or Cordura offer excellent durability and tear resistance.
  • Robust Zippers: YKK zippers are known for their reliability and smooth operation.
  • Reinforced Seams: Double or triple stitching at stress points enhances the backpack's longevity.

8. Versatility

The ideal travel backpack should adapt to various situations and trip lengths.

  • Expandable Design: Some backpacks feature expandable compartments for extra capacity when needed.
  • Detachable Daypack: A smaller, detachable pack is perfect for day trips or as a carry-on for flights.
  • Backpack with wheels: Backpacks that can convert into a wheeled piece of luggage are perfect for travelers with a sensitive back!

1

9. External Attachment Points

The ability to secure gear to the outside of your pack can be incredibly useful.

  • Compression Straps: These allow you to cinch down your pack for better weight distribution and to attach items externally.
  • Daisy Chains: A series of loops sewn onto the backpack's exterior for attaching carabiners or gear.
  • Water Bottle Pockets: Easy-access external pockets for hydration on the go.

10. Lightweight Design

Every ounce counts when you're carrying your life on your back.

  • Lightweight Materials: Modern technical fabrics offer durability without excess weight.
  • Streamlined Design: Avoid backpacks with unnecessary frills that add weight.
  • Weight-to-Volume Ratio: Consider the backpack's weight in relation to its capacity to ensure you're getting the most efficient design.

Don't underestimate the importance of a lightweight pack. Those extra ounces add up quickly, especially on longer trips or when navigating airports.

When choosing a travel backpack, consider your specific needs and travel style. Urban explorers might prioritize security features and laptop protection, while outdoor enthusiasts may focus more on durability and water resistance. The perfect women’s travel backpack balances these features to provide comfort, convenience, and peace of mind on your adventures.

Remember, the best backpack is the one that fits your body and your travel needs. Take the time to try on different models, load them with weight, and adjust the straps to find your perfect match. With the right backpack by your side, you’ll be ready to take on any travel adventure with confidence and comfort.

Happy travels!

Solgaard Carry-On Closet Review | Is it really a game-changer?

Solgaard Carry-On Closet Review | Is it really a game-changer?

For the longest time, my current carry-on,  met all my criteria, leaving me content and uninterested in exploring other options. However, as I continually packed and unpacked, the idea of effortlessly hanging up my clothes and heading out became an enticing daydream.

What is a hanging closet?

A hanging closet, as exemplified by the Carry-On Closet, is a brilliant and long-overdue solution to the common inconvenience of unpacking while traveling. The focal point of this ingenious concept lies in its patented “closet,” an innovative shelving system designed for efficient packing.

You can neatly fold and organize their clothing within this hanging structure. When it’s time to unpack, a simple loosening of the straps allows the bag to be effortlessly hung from the suitcase handle, transforming it into a portable, organized closet on the go.

It’s a clever and practical solution that simplifies the packing and unpacking process for travelers, making life on the road considerably more convenient

So with out further a do, here is my Solgaard Carry-on closet review!

Is the Solgaard Carry-On closet a gamechanger?

As you might know, I am a seasoned backpacker and have always opted for a backpack rather than a suitcase. So it was natural that my journey toward a suitcase featuring a built-in closet started with a backpack, the Solgaard Venture.  I loved the built-in closet and started taking it on longer trips.

However, as I started to travel more for business, I started to want a suitcase. But before we dive into a deeper review, make sure to check if a built-in closet is right for you!

The Sogaard is right for you if:

  • You frequently stay at accomendations with limited storage facilities such as hostels and small hotels
  • You have a dislike for unpacking but still desire a well-organized travel experience.
  • You prefer organizing your clothing in distinct compartments for efficient packing.
  • You’re seeking a robust and resilient suitcase capable of withstanding global travel challenges and are willing to pay for it.

The Sogaard is NOT for you if:

  • You prefer to maximize every inch of available luggage space.
  • Your preference leans towards soft-shell or two-wheel luggage options. If you prefer a soft option, check out the Solgaard Endeavor review.

 Features of the Carry-On Closet

A Built-In Shelving System That Truly Organizes
Unlike most luggage, the Solgaard Carry-On Closet features an innovative built-in shelving system, keeping your clothes and accessories neatly separated. Beyond its clever storage design, thoughtful touches—like sturdy wheels, a comfortable handle, and eco-friendly materials—come together to elevate your travel experience.

Two Carry-On Sizes to Suit Your Needs

The Carry-On Closet Medium measures 20.8″ x 13.4″ x 9″, making it a great option if you often fly with both domestic and international airlines. Meanwhile, the Carry-On Closet Large comes in at 22.4″ x 14.6″ x 9.6″ and fits the baggage allowances of most US carriers. I chose the large size, but both share the same standout features, ensuring you won’t miss out on the benefits no matter which one you pick.

Five-Shelf Closet

The Carry-On Closet offers a versatile five-shelf hanging organizer that can be easily removed and collapsed.

It includes shelves of various sizes and styles, such as open, zippered, and divided compartments.

Once you've packed your items, simply pull the side straps to compress the closet, and it conveniently fits into the right half of the suitcase beneath an adjustable clasp.

To unpack, release the compression straps and secure the closet to the suitcase handle (don't forget to fasten the support buckle for upright stability) or hang it on a hook or closet rod at your destination.

Polycarbonate Shell and Aluminum Frame

The Solgaard Carry-On Closet uses a robust polycarbonate shell and aluminum frame, which the company touts as “virtually unbreakable.” While I haven’t pushed it to its absolute limits, I did discover that the shell can easily support my weight when I’m fastening it shut—an encouraging sign that the overall build quality is both sturdy and reliable.

One-Hand Pinch Opening With a TSA-Approved Lock

Instead of the usual zipper closures, the Solgaard Carry-On Closet comes equipped with two sturdy latches that make opening and closing remarkably quick. To secure the suitcase, fold and slot each latch; to open it, simply pinch the tabs inward. Plus, its built-in TSA-approved three-digit lock offers that extra layer of protection and peace of mind while you’re on the go.

360° Wheels and Ergonomic Handle

Thanks to frictionless 360° spinner wheels, the Solgaard Carry-On Closet glides effortlessly through crowded airports and train stations. As someone who often races between gates, I appreciate how the ergonomic handle—with a slightly larger circumference than most suitcases I’ve used—helps reduce wrist strain and feels noticeably sturdier.

Sturdy Handle with a Smart Twist
The Carry-On Closet features a robust, ergonomic handle that makes navigating airports, hotel lobbies, and cobblestone streets feel smooth and effortless. But it’s more than just comfortable to grip—it also doubles as a handy support for the hanging closet system. When you’re staying somewhere without a closet or convenient hook, simply extend the handle and hang the shelving unit right from your suitcase. It’s a small design detail that makes a big difference in keeping things organized on the go.

Recycled Shell & Shore-Tex® Lining

One of the most impressive aspects of this carry-on is its eco-friendly construction. The recycled polycarbonate shell is durable, and the Shore-Tex® lining is made from 100% ocean-bound plastic. According to Solgaard, each suitcase helps remove around six pounds of plastic from coastal areas, making it a thoughtful choice if you want to minimize your environmental footprint while still enjoying a high-quality piece of luggage.

Personal review: Solgaard carry-on closet

After a few months of use, I’m really pleased with my Solgaard Carry-On Closet. The high-quality materials, thoughtful organization, and sleek design all come together to create a suitcase that feels truly functional, not just a gimmick. It’s been a pleasant surprise to find a product that lives up to its marketing claims, and my initial skepticism has turned into genuine enthusiasm. If you’re looking for a carry-on that streamlines your packing and keeps you organized, whether for business or leisure, the Solgaard Carry-On Closet definitely delivers on its promises.

Pros & Cons of the Solgaard Carry-On Closet

What I loved about the Carry-On Closet:

Seamless Organization

The built-in shelving system aligns perfectly with my organized approach to travel. Clothes and accessories remain neatly stacked, making it effortless to keep everything in its place.

Hassle-Free Unpacking

I usually want to hit the ground running at my destination, so time-consuming unpacking is the last thing on my mind. With this suitcase, I can simply hang up the closet and be done—no rummaging or repacking required.

/

Impressive Compression Feature

The compression straps really do save a lot of space, allowing me to tuck in more clothes or souvenirs without feeling overstuffed. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference when you’re trying to fit everything into a carry-on.

Built to Last

Between the sturdy telescoping handle and the resilient hard shell, the Solgaard Carry-On Closet looks and feels durable enough to withstand the usual bumps and knocks of travel. I appreciate not having to worry about cracked corners or flimsy latches.

Eco-Conscious Choice

Knowing this suitcase is crafted from recycled materials—and that Solgaard is actively working to reduce plastic pollution—makes me feel better about my travel footprint. It’s nice to have gear that aligns with a more sustainable mindset.

Flexible Storage Options

The removable closet is a game-changer. If I need extra room or just want traditional open luggage space, I can take the closet out entirely. This versatility means I can adapt the suitcase to different travel scenarios without sacrificing convenience.

What I didn’t like so much

Tendency to Tip Over

If I’ve packed the bag heavily or opened it while it’s standing upright, it sometimes tips forward. It’s not a deal-breaker, but I do have to be mindful when unpacking in a rush.

Clamshell Over Zippers

I personally prefer a zippered closure for convenience, so the clamshell design took some getting used to. If you’re set on a zipper, consider the Carry-On Closet Lite instead.

Occasional Handle Jams

When the suitcase is packed to the brim, the telescoping handle can occasionally stick. It’s manageable with a little finesse, but it’s still something to keep in mind if you often max out your luggage space.

    Traveling with Solgaard carry-on closet

Mastering the art of packing a new suitcase is a process that involves a fair share of time and a bit of trial and error, especially when you try to pack so the suitcase won’t fall over. Before we go into packing the compartments, here are some general packing tips for the Solgaard Carry-On Closet.

How to pack the Solgaard Carry-On Closet

    1. Try handing the carry on closet to a door or something stable while you add your clothes

    2. Start from Bottom to top. This is way easier as the carry on closet touches the ground when attached to the suitcase making it easier to fill in the bottom compartments first.

    3. Fill up each compartment to 75%. This way it compresses perfectly.

    4. I recently went back to rolling my clothes again instead of folding them. For more convenience when taking things out, I use a small rubber band.

Packing Efficiency: How the ‘Closet’ Feature Works

    Top Shelf:

The top shelf, the narrowest one with a mesh barrier, is designated for storing bras, underwear, and occasionally socks. I only use it for socks when necessary, as it’s often more efficient to tuck socks inside my shoes, and only some of my footwear requires socks.

    Second Shelf

Much taller than the top shelf and also equipped with a small mesh barrier, this shelf serves as my wildcard space. It accommodates bigger items like my sweater or my sleepwear..

    Third Shelf

The larger of the two zippered pockets, this shelf is where I pack my tops, dresses, and jumpsuits, as these usually constitute the majority of my wearable clothing.

    Fourth Shelf:

The second, slightly zippered pocket is where I prefer to pack my pants and jeans, even though they take up more space than tops.

    Bottom Shelf:

Located at the bottom, this spacious open compartment is divided into sections. It serves as my catch-all for items such as swimsuits, tights, or athletic wear and works best when these items are neatly rolled up.

    Packing tips from the Pros

After traveling 40+ destinations around the world: I have gathered some experiences in packing.

My Osprey Sojourn wheeled 60L review

My Osprey Sojourn wheeled 60L review

Hey there, welcome to my Osprey Sojourn Review!

I switched from a regular backpack to a backpack with wheels two years ago to be more comfortable and to not have to carry my luggage on my back at all times. I absolutely HATED having to the take the backpack on and off and carry it. It was so annoying!  Also, I felt like I wanted to have a more sophisticated looking piece of luggage when checking into more upscale hotels.

Over the past two years, I’ve wheeled the Osprey Sojourn across countless airports and cities, and I’ve carried on my back to reach the most remote accommodation from treehouse to beach bungalow.

In this review, I’ll break down all of my experiences, the reasons why I switched, what you can expect from the Osprey Sojurn with wheels, and why I think it’s a great backpack (but has its flaws).

Quick verdict: The most practical luggage ever!

After bringing the Osprey Sojourn on my past 8 trips, I can say: it truly revolutionized the way I move around with my luggage!

The travel backpack with wheels has made traveling so much more enjoyable by:

    • Allowing me to wheel it on airports or cities so I could reach my destination without breaking my back
    • Maintaining my independence: I can still maneuver and carry my belongings by myself if needed to.
    • Making me look more sophisticated: when wheeled it looks sleek and can be brought to more sophisticated accommodations
    • Giving me enough space to travel for 3 months

While I am still not too excited about the color options, I have come to love the extra comfort and freedom provided by the Osprey Sojourn.

My initial concerns about the weight of the backpack itself didn’t prove to matter too much. No matter how much I packed, I would never reach the airline limits.

Overall, the comfortable wheeling and carrying experience make up for the extra 300 grams and the lack of color choices! It’s definitely not cheap, BUT, the Sojourn’s quality seems to be amazing. Even after countless miles traveled, it has very little damage. Plus, Osprey offers a free repair service for all its packs.

Advantages and disadvantages of the Osprey Sojourn

Pros of the Osprey Sojourn wheeled backpack

    Easily convertible

You can convert the Osprey Sojourn from a wheeled suitcase like piece of luggage to a backpack in less than 20 seconds. So you are always quickly ready to jump on that boat taxi when needed to.

Comfortable to carry on your back

It has an advanced backpack system with well-padded, soft hip belts and shoulder straps that feel great against your skin. The multiple adjustment options are a lifesaver, allowing you to balance the weight perfectly on your back. While it doesn’t quite match the comfort of my old Jack Wolfskin backpack without wheels, the Sojourn is the only wheeled backpack I’ve found that I can comfortably carry for up to 30 minutes. It really makes traveling easier and more enjoyable!

    Smooth to wheel

Not only does it have a super comfortable backpack system, but it’s also a breeze to wheel around. The generously sized wheels can handle uneven ground like a champ, and it even stands up on its own

    Look apporpriate

The Sojourn strikes the perfect balance between practicality and style. It lets me roll into upscale accommodations with a sophisticated look, and when I’m out backpacking, it seamlessly fits in and handles everything effortlessly.

Disadvantages of the Osprey Sojourn wheeled backpack

    Higher Weight

The comfortable backpack system, sturdy handle and steady make the Sojourn heavier. Compared to other backpack or duffles with wheels, the Sojourn weighs about 10% more which can be a disadvantage if you plan to carry it for longer periods. However, it makes up for its increased weight by providing you with the most comfortable straps and very sturdy wheels.

    Lack of color choices

It might be just me, but I am unhappy with both color choices currently offered.

    Who is the Sojourn for?

You will love the Osprey Sojourn if:

    • You used are an independent traveler who appreciates comfort
    • Intent to carry your luggage on your back at times
    • You care about quality luggage and want your belongings to be protected

The Osprey Sojourn is not for you if:

    • You intend to carry it on your back for hours
    • You don’t switch accommodations or travel for vacation purposes
    • A piece of luggage to be used as carry on as well
    Travel backpack with wheels

    Product Overview

The Osprey Sojourn is the most sophisticated travel backpack with wheels. It easily transforms from wheeled luggage to backpack in seconds.

It combines the best of both worlds: the flexibility of a backpack and the comfort of a suitcase!

    HighRoad chassis & Oversized wheels

Thanks to its HighRoad chassis and oversized wheels, you can easily wheel it through airports or on uneven surfaces, taking the weight off your shoulders!

    Stowaway AirScape™ backpanel and harness

You can convert the Sojourn into a backpack in seconds when you need to reach your treehouse or beach bungalow. The comfortable hip and shoulder straps make carrying it a breeze, even for someone like me who isn’t very fit.

    StraightJacket compression straps

They cinch down your packed items, giving you extra storage space when you need it. It’s perfect for those times when you need to squeeze in just a little bit more

    Conclusion

Get the Osprey Sojourn if you are an adventurous traveler but enjoy being comfortable!

I love traveling the Osprey Sojourn and have been using it for almost all trips as a check-in, but business trips. I wheel my luggage about 80% of the time and can’t even imagine going back to carrying all my luggage at airports, bus stations and through cities.

My biggest concern was the weight, and ended up not mattering at all. No matter how much I packed (even with numerous tins of Ackee), I could never surpass airline limitations and was always comfortable wheeling and carrying it. If you are worried about the weight, consider Osprey’s Farpoint wheeled which is XXX grams lighter, but also not as smooth to wheel and comfortable to carry.

I love the concept of a wheeled backpack so much that I just upgraded my carry on to a wheeled backpack as well.

If you are considering a backpack with wheels as a carry-on luggage, check out my reviews.

    Packing tips

    1. Organize with Packing Cubes: I can’t stress enough how much packing cubes have changed my travel game. They keep everything neatly organized and make it super easy to find what you need without digging through your entire bag. Plus, they help compress your clothes, freeing up extra space for souvenirs or those last-minute items.
    2. Distribute Weight Evenly: Trust me, your back will thank you if you balance the weight properly. Place heavier items like shoes and books towards the bottom and closer to the wheels. This way, your backpack won’t tip over, and it’s easier to carry when you need to convert it to a backpack.
    3. Get a backpack cover: Consider getting a luggage protection cover for your Sojourn to make it easier to spot on the luggage carousel.
