Creating social change on Zanzibar
As we continue our journey to the outskirts of Kendwa, Asya tells us about a group of local women she referred to as “Mamas.”
Zanrec has been working with them for some time, educating them on the risks of waste. Zanrec also supports them with phasing out dumpsites.
As we walk with the group of women and collect trash, we can feel their sense of pride and belonging. They are proud to provide a healthier environment for their children, and it feels great to spend time with them. Old dumpsites have been converted into playgrounds. They now benefit the whole community. Click below to see more
On our way back, Asya explains how Zanrec recruits, trains, and equips entrepreneurial individuals to become community waste agents. Zanrec has trained 20 community waste agents so far. All of them play an important role in cleaning Zanzibar. Despite raising awareness in their communities, the local entrepreneurs’ influence and support others through their waste collecting activities.
