People of Tanzania
More than 120 different ethnic groups call Tanzania their home. The frozen culture of the Masai may be the most prominent one. The many influences make Tanzania quite a multilingual country. In Tanzania, a total of 130 languages is spoken. While Swhelli is the official language, none of the languages is natively spoken by the majority. Tanzania’s Swahili culture is a mix of Arab and African culture; however, more significant Asian settlements (mainly Indian) exist, too.
We always felt very welcomed and were happy about the passions with which the locals overcame language barriers with us. However, some of the cultural practices such as the circumcisions of females and the “handling” of women left us speechless at times.
