Manchmal bekommt man Einblicke in andere Welten, wenn man sich einfach traut loszulassen. So genossen wir unsere Zeit auf der Insel Ometepe und vergaßen unsere Reservierung im Hostel Maria zu verlängern. Die Nicaraguaner haben uns so offen und freundlich in Empfang genommen, dass wir uns auch zu später Stunde zuversichtlich und furchtlos auf die Suche nach einer Unterkunft machen konnten. Wir stießen auf das Hostel Espirales und waren sehr glücklich darüber, dass es von Einheimischen geleitet wurde.
Wir unterhielten uns ein Weilchen mit den freundlichen Angestellten und mussten erneut feststellen, dass das Konzept von Sicherheit und auch das Sicherheitsniveau für Touristen ein ganz anderes ist als für die Einheimischen, insbesondere für die Frauen.
In dieser Nacht erfuhren wir, von den Problemen der Unterdrückung, der geschlechtlichen Ungleichbehandlung und den vielen schweren Schicksalen der Frauen auf Ometepe. Probleme, denen REMO den Kampf angesagt hat. Zusammen haben sich die Inselfrauen durch verschiedene Präventionsprojekte und das Schaffen wirtschaftlicher Perspektiven stark gemacht.

Obwohl Nicaragua zu einem der ärmsten Länder zählt, hat es in den letzten 5 Jahren hinsichtlich der Gleichberechtigung der Geschlechter große Fortschritte gemacht. Nach dem Global Gender Gap Report verzeichnet Nicaragua bei der Gleichstellung der Geschlechter eine der kleinsten Lücken der Welt. Die Realität hingegen ist leider nicht so rosig. Eine Gallup Studie hat kürzlich herausgefunden, dass sich mehr als 50 % der Frauen nicht gleichberechtigt fühlen. Gewalt gegen Frauen und vor allem die lebendige Machismo Kultur hält weiter an.

REMO steht für „Red de mujeres de Ometepe“ übersetzt “Netzwerk für Frauen auf Ometepe”. Es ist eine Organisation gegründet von den Inselfrauen für die Inselfrauen. Der Fokus ist dabei insbesondere darauf gerichtet Frauen aus häuslicher und sexueller Gewalt zu retten und Perspektiven zu schaffen. REMO hat verschiedenen Projetkte geschaffen und unterstützt die Inselfrauen dabei ein Einkommen zu generieren, neues Vertrauen zu fassen und an eine bessere Zukunft zu glauben. Das Hostel Espirales ist eines dieser Projekte.
Die sozialen Unternehmerinnen bilden eine Gruppe von über 60 Frauen, die alle als Freiwillige begonnen haben. Allein durch ihr persönliches und soziales Engagement ist es ihnen gelungen ein raffiniertes Arbeitsnetzwerk auf der Insel zu schaffen. Gemeinsam leisten die Frauen von REMO Beiträge zur gesellschaftlichen, ökonomischen und kulturellen Entwicklung auf der Insel und somit für das ganze Land.

Darüber hinaus bietet das Hostel Platz für wöchentliche Kinoabende oder andere Veranstaltungen. REMO zielt nicht nur darauf ab, das Einkommen der Frauen zu verbessern. Nach der Überwindung ein paar anfänglicher Schwierigkeiten ist es den Frauen der Isla Ometepe gelungen, Land zu kultivieren. Die Kämpferinnen sind bereits einen großen Schritt gegangen. Nun ist es unsere Aufgabe die Augen offen zu halten. Die Frauen und Mädchen wollen auf sich aufmerksam machen und auf der Insel nicht in Vergessenheit geraten. Die starre Rollenverteilung und der Mangel an Einnahmequellen bindet die Frauen teilweise an ihre Männer, so das sie zu Sklaven im eigenen Paradies werden.
Vor allem Tourismus schafft Hoffnung und kann die Leben und Schicksale zum Positiven verändern. Wenn du die Gelegenheit bekommst das wundervolle Nicaragua zu besuchen, dann ist es eine umso schönere Erfahrung wenn du die Möglichkeit hast, die lokale Gemeinschaft zu unterstützen. Wir versuchen auf Reisen lokale Probleme zu erkennen und können so einen kleinen Beitrag leisten. Sei es nur eine Übernachtung, ein Mittagessen oder nette offene Worte. Die Machismo-Kultur bestimmt immer noch das Leben vieler Frauen in ganz Lateinamerika. Das Wort “Macho” hat viele verschiedene Konnotationen. Mann kann das Wort positiv werten. Der Mann ist der “starke Beschützer”, der für seine Frau und Familie sorgt. Häufig ist das Wort eher negativ behaftet, und wird genutzt, wenn Männer sich den Frauen überlegen fühlen. Ein “Machista-Mann” sieht Frauen als ein Sexualobjekt. Anzügliche Kommentare, Männer mit mehreren Freundinnen und “Frauen, die sich nicht auf das Studium konzentrieren sollten” und “zu Hause bleiben” sind das Ergebnis.

Auch wenn die Machismo Kultur impliziert, dass Männer die Versorger sind, ist die Realität für Frauen in Nicaragua ganz anders. El Diario Nuevo erklärte, dass etwa 40% der Haushalte in Nicaragua allein von Frauen bewohnt werden. Laut dem Family and Fertility Bulletin haben 25% der Frauen unter 20 Jahren Kinder.
