G-R-A-N-A-D-A, man möchte fast jeden einzelnen Buchstaben bunt bemalen, wenn man an diese pittoreske Kolonialstadt denkt. Granada zählt neben León zu den schönsten Städten Nicaraguas. Wir sind mal wieder bei Dunkelheit angekommen und konnten so nur einen kleinen Blick auf die Stadt erhaschen. Auf dem Weg zu unserem Airbnb kamen wir an großen Kirchen vorbei und passierten die Calle la Calzada, wo sich Cafés, Restaurants und kleine Shops einander reihen. Eine geschäftige Straße, wo sich Touristen und Einheimische gleicherweise treffen.

Kosmopolitische Stimmung

Granada wurde 1524 von den Spaniern gegründet. Mit ihrer perfekten Lage wurde sie schnell beliebt und zieht heute Reisende aus der ganzen Welt an. Granada liegt am Nicaraguasee, wobei du vom Seeufer sogar die Insel Ometepe mit ihren Vulkanen sehen kannst. Die Kolonialstadt ist zudem nur einen Katzensprung von der indigenen Stadt Masaya entfernt, sie bietet faszinierende Sehenswürdigkeiten und überaus freundliche Menschen.

Granada schreit danach erforscht zu werden. So konnten wir der Versuchung nicht widerstehen und begaben uns nach unserer Ankunft noch auf kurze Erkundungsreise. Granada gehört zu den ältesten Städten Lateinamerikas und lockt zudem mit beeindruckender Architektur, bunten Bauwerken und bezaubernden Gässchen. Umgeben von Seen und Vulkanen hat die charmante Stadt einiges zu bieten.

Die Straße La Calzada reicht vom Parque Colón, dem Hauptplatz der Stadt bis hin zum quirligen Partybereich. In den Abendstunden blüht die Straße auf und zahlreiche Bars und Restaurants öffnen ihre Türen und bieten Sitzmöglichkeiten im Freien. Dabei bietet sich für jedes Budget etwas an, ob man nun einfach bei einem kühlen “Toña oder “Victoria” die beliebten einheimischen Biere und sein Leben genießt, oder doch die Eleganz der Stadt in einem schicken Restaurant auskostet. Dieser in der Tat sehr touristische Ort ist wegen seiner geselligen Atmosphäre auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert.

Wir setzten uns mit ein paar kühlen Toña und leckeren Pupusas ans Ende der Calle Calzada.

Nur wenige Gehminuten vom Herzen des Stadtzentrums entfernt, findest du eine entspannte Atmosphäre, während du die pastellfarbenen Gassen entlangläufst. Fast an jedem Eck waren wir einfach wie verzaubert von der malerischen Stadt. Wie in jeder Stadt Mittelamerikas, findest du auch in Granada einen sog. Mercado. Das Marktviertel ist kommerzieller Mittelpunkt und gibt Einblicke in das rege Treiben der Stadt. Überraschender – und auch erfreulicherweise stellten wir fest, dass der Großteil der Produkte auch auf nationaler Ebene hergestellt wurde.

Obwohl es in der charmanten Stadt unglaublich heiß werden kann, lässt sich Granada am einfachsten zu Fuß erkunden. Granada ist die zweitälteste Stadt Mittelamerikas und die älteste Stadt Nicaraguas. Sobald wir unser Airbnb verlassen hatten, waren wir nur noch am Staunen. Ein Großteil der markanten Gebäude und Strukturen ist der Stadt erhalten geblieben. Also nutze deine Chance und tauche eine in die bunte Welt der Farben. Halte dich nicht nur im Touristengebiet auf, sondern erkunde am besten die Gegend! Neben vielen spannenden Ecken, findest du kleine Essensstände, die im ersten Moment sehr unscheinbar scheinen, doch Köstlichkeiten anbieten, die das Angebot der Restaurants nicht nur preislich schlagen können. Wir empfehlen das Ceviche, in Connys Cevicheria. Es ist ein super kleiner Stand gegenüber dem Optiker Münkel in der Straße Calle Rial Xalteva. Absolut köstlich!

Kathedrale von Granada

Die kanariengelbe “Kathedrale von Granada” ist das Wahrzeichen der Stadt. Sie blickt auf den Parque Colón. Das stadtbildprägende Gebäude wurde 1583 gebaut und wurde bereits mehrfach zerstört und wieder aufgebaut.

Iglesia La Merced

Die “Iglesia La Merced” ist eine der ältesten Kirchen Mittelamerikas und gehört mit ihrer verwitterten und sehr außergewöhnlichen Außenfassade auch zu einer der schönsten Kirchen Mittelamerikas. Eine Besteigung ist lohnenswert – vom Glockenturm aus, bietet sich eine spektakuläre Aussicht über ganz Granada und den Nicaragua – See.

Iglesia Guadalupe

Die “Iglesia Guadalupe” findet ihr ganz am Ende der Calle Calzada. Am eindrucksvollsten erstrahlt die weiß leuchtende Kirche bei Nacht. An Wochenenden trifft sich das junge Volk auf den Stufen der Kirche und genießt seine Freizeit. Wir trafen dort auf Dayton und seinen Freund Hector – ein leidenschaftlicher Bullenreiter, der regelmäßig an Stierkämpfen teilnimmt.

Auf dem zentralen Platz mit Ausblick auf die Kathedrale von Granada gibt es auch zahlreiche Restaurants. Außerdem ist der Platz perfekt um die Granadinos bei ihrem Alltagsleben zu beobachten. Man sagt den Nicaraguanern nach, dass sie zu den glücklichsten Menschen der Welt gehören. Hier kannst du dich zurücklehnen und einfach die tolle Atmosphäre genießen.

Granada ist nur eine Stunde von der Hauptstadt Managua entfernt. Falls deine Nicaragua Reise ganz entspannt und mit bezaubernden Eindrücken starten soll, ist Granada mehr als geeignet.

Die Fahrt mit dem Taxi kostet etwa 12 €. Für unter einem Euro (ca. 30 C$) kannst du aber auch ganz einfach mit dem Bus nach Granada fahren.

Granada hat keinen Busbahnhof. Busse und Kleinbusse fahren an einem speziellen Ort ab. Frag einfach deinen Gastgeber. Die Einheimischen kennen sich mit den Busverbindungen aus.

Granada wird von vielen Reisenden besucht und ist im Allgemeinen sicher. Granada ist trotzdem die drittgrößte Stadt Nicaraguas und es herrscht auch hier teilweise große Armut, sodass du bei Dunkelheit nicht allein auf den Straßen sein solltest. Auf der beliebten Calle Calzada besteht auch spät abends kein Problem, aber wenn es doch Nacht wird, solltest du dich nicht zu weit entfernen, ansonsten ein Taxi für den Heimweg nehmen.
