Nach meinen ersten Wochen in Jamaikas Touristenhochburgen Montego Bay und Negril war es für mich an der Zeit, etwas gemächlicher angehen zu lassen. Das charmante Dörfchen Belmont wurde mir bereits in Negril wärmstens empfohlen und so machte ich mich mit dem Route Taxi auf in Fahrtrichtung Süden! Etwas auf halben Weg in Richtung Treasure Beach erstreckt sich das kleine Dorf entlang des Highways. Unter der Woche geht es hier sehr gemächlich zu, während am Wochenende die kleinen Restaurants und Bars zum Leben erwachen. In Belmont selbst gibt es abgesehen von Peter Toshs Mausoleum nicht wirklich viel zu unternehmen. Trotzdem ist das der kleine Ort einen Abstecher wert und eine entspannte Auszeit von Negril.

Unter der Woche ist in Belmont wirklich so gar nichts los und so hatte ich den Blick über den Sonnenuntergang in der Bar meist für mich alleine. Dies änderte sich sobald das Wochenende hereinbrach. Zu meiner Freude kamen zahlreiche Jamaikanaer aus der Umgebung um in Belmont und am Nahegelegenen Bluefields Marine Park das Wochenden zu zelebrieren.

Der Strand in Belmont ist ziemlich klein und an der Straße gelegen und ist daher nicht mein liebster Strand um den Tag zu verbringen. Die Aussicht auf das türkise Meer verleiteten mich dann aber doch dazu immer mal wieder für eine Abkühlung vorbeizukommen. Morgens kann man hier die Fischer beobachten wie sie mit ihren Fängen an Land zurückkehren.

Viel besser geeignet für einen entspannten Strandtag ist der zwar schmale, aber schöne und kostenlose Strand des Bluefields Marine Parks. Unter der Woche ist hier ähnlich wie in Belmont nichts los und so hatte ich den Strand mal wieder fast für mich alleine. Am Wochenende gibt es hier kleine Streetfoddstrände, gute Vibes und kaum Platz für mein Handtuch.

Peter Tosh, ein Gründungsmitglied der Wailers und lange enger Vertraute von Bob Marley fand in Belmont seine letzte Ruhestätte. Hinter einem bunt bemalten Tor befindet sich ein in grün, gelb, und rot gestrichenes Mausoleum, ein letztes politisches Statement to “legalize it.” Zur Zeit meines Besuchs in Belmont war das Mausoleum leider geschlossen und so konnte ich es nur im vorbeigehen bestaunen.

Belmont ist etwa 2,5 Stunden Fahrt von Negril mit dem Route Taxi entfernt. Ich hatte immer extra Glück mit dem Transfer, da ich in Savanna a Mar nicht warten musst bis sich das Taxi füllte. Ein Charter Taxi kostet ab Negril ca. $120.

Mystic Cottages: Wahrscheinlich eine der schönsten und dennoch preisgünstigsten Unterkünfte in Jamaika. Hoch über den Bäumen kannst du die Aussicht genießen und so richtig abschalten. Außerdem ein perfekter Ort, um mehr über die Rasta-Kultur zu erfahren. Die deutschsprachige Lydia lebt schon seit Jahren auf Jamaika und setzt sich intensiv mit der Rastafari Kultur auseinander.

Es ist ein kleines Dorf, das unter der Woche besonders ruhig ist. Ich habe mich immer sehr sicher gefühlt. Die einzige “Gefahr”, die ich gespürt habe, war der Verkehr! Die Autos und Motorräder haben einen halsbrecherischen Fahrstil der mit zunehmender Stunde rasanter wird. Da es in Belmont keinen Weg für Fußgeänger gibt, solltest du daher achtsam unterwegs sein.
