MONTEGO BAY

JAMAICA
Montego BAY Itinerary

Crystal clear waters, all-inklusives & Jamaican city life

Duration: at least 5 days

Budget: $ 75 per day

Stay:  Belleh23 or Raggamuffin

I was a little weary of Montego as it seems such a popular all-inclusive spot. However, the city quickly grew on me, and I was happy to return before my flight back to Germany. The airport is located just outside of downtown and right by the beach. The plane was touching the ground as the sun was setting.
I found Montego to be the perfect starting point for my trip to Jamaica. Its touristic infrastructure allows you to settle in quite quickly while downtown affords you glimpses into real Jamaican city life. Furthermore, as the island is relatively small, one can set out to do anything from MoBay.
For starters, let’s divide Montego Bay into roughly two areas: Gloucester Avenue, aka the “Hip Strip,” lined by beaches and bars and restaurants on the other. The “Hip Strip” is Montego’s main tourist area, and you can feel an American vibe.

  • Sight Seeing 40% 40%
  • Beaches 70% 70%
  • Day-Trips 95% 95%
  • Party 100% 100%

The rest of Montego Bay and downtown feel a lot more real and offer an authentic feeling to those of venture out. To experience the best of both worlds, I can only urge you to venture beyond the Hip Strip and get to know Mobay from an Airbnb in a more local neighborhood.
I loved my stay with Cerri and Jah B in Mount Salem. The vibe was so lovely and welcoming. Not only did I have a fantastic view over Mobay, but some of my favorite food sports, such as Tradishonal, were within walking distance.

Beaches in Montego Bay

Kingston is the world’s dancehall hub, and the famous parties attract dancers from around the world. So naturally, it’s easy to find a dancehall teacher to get your groove going!

Harmony beach

Coming from downtown, Harmony beach is the first beach you’ll pass. It’s a free public beach that was just recently opened. To my surprise, it’s pretty large and was always empty when I walked by in the mornings. Unfortunately, the beach is closed Mondays for maintenance.

Mobaybeach

Beaches in Montego Bay

Doctors Cove

Doctor’s Cove

This stunning beach’s supposedly healing waters have attracted visitors since its opening in 1906. Today, it’s Mobay’s most famous beach offering visitors all kinds of amenities. You’ll find the entrance next to Starbucks (which already says a lot). The Entrance fee is $6. While the beach feels almost like you have entered a hotel complex, the color of the water and the views of incoming and departing flights are unique.
Doctor’s Cove beach is also the perfect spot to spend your last day before heading to the airport as it’s close by and even offers showers.

One Man Beach

If you want to hang out with locals and have a good time, the place to be. There’s also a beachfront soccer place.

Depositphotos 50376997 L

Dead End Beach

Dead End Beach is the famous beach where airplanes land right over your head, as the airport is right beside the beach! This relatively small stretch of beach located north of Gloucester Avenue is also known as Buccaneer beach. It’s a free public beach with no facilities. Located just a short walk from the more famous Doctor’s Cave Beach, Dead End Beach is a more relaxed place to watch the sunset.

HipStrip

Montego's Gloucester ave, aka. "Hip Strip"

Mobay’s Hips Strip is the main party street in Montego Bay, with many bars, nightclubs, and restaurants. It’s also where you’ll find Jamaica’s largest duty-free shopping area. In addition, it is the center of tourism. It’s not my favorite spot as food and vibes are much better downtown, but you’ll find Island Strains Herb House there – my favorite place to spend sunsets in MoBay!

Downtown Montego Bay

Downtown Mobay isn’t exactly pretty and is a pretty gritty city. As I stayed in Mount Salem, my daily walk to the beaches took me along Chruch St., Mobay’s “most picturesque” street. You’ll find Mobay’s Townhouse, Gregorian-style structures, and some pretty churches there. While I found the beach areas of Mobay more touristic, I enjoyed my time downtown. The food is better, and it feels more like an actual Jamaican city with fewer tourists.

Sam Sharpe Square

The square was named after Jamaican National hero Samuel Sharp. Samuel Sharp led the Christmas rebellion in 1831. In the afternoon hours, you’ll find tasty street food around, and it’s a good spot for hanging out and observing the crazy hustle of the city. Close by, you’ll also find the National heros’ Monument.

Montego Bay Cultural Center

Southwest of Sam’ Sharpe Square, you’ll find Montego’s Cultural Center. Home to a history museum, a small art gallery, and (before covid) MoBay’s cultural events. The museum is especially interesting as it tells the story of Montego Bay from the Time of the Arawaks to the present day.

Mobay
Greenwood

Greenwood Great House

A visit to Greenwood Great House is a must-do for any history buff. This 18th-century plantation home was once owned by the famous pirate Henry Morgan.
Today, it’s a museum where you can learn about the area’s colonial past. Be sure to tour the grounds and see the beautiful bay views from the property. Greenwood Great House offers visitors a chance to explore Jamaica’s diverse history and culture, just a short distance from the bustling city center and overlooking the scenic Caribbean Sea. Whether you are interested in learning about old plantation life or exploring local artworks, Greenwood Great House has something for everyone. And if you want to relax and enjoy breathtaking views of the water and stunning mountain scenery, there are plenty of outdoor spaces where you can do just that.

Rose Hall Great House

If you’re looking for a truly unique and memorable experience in Montego Bay, be sure to check out Rose Hall Great House. Rose Hall Great House is another must-see for history lovers. This 18th-century plantation home is brimming with history. Rose Hall showcases beautiful historical architecture and offers tours of the property that take you through interesting landmarks like the slave cemetery and Annie Palmer’s private chambers. Whether you’re a local or just visiting for a day, Rose Hall is a must-see destination for anyone interested in iconic Jamaican history. This 18th-century plantation home was once owned by Annie Palmer, the so-called “White Witch of Rose Hall.” Today, it’s a museum where you can learn about the area’s dark past. Be sure to tour the grounds and see the beautiful bay views from the property.

Montego 1
Montego

Green Grotto Caves

This 1.5 km-long cave system is famous for being the filming location for the James Bond movie Live and Let Die, but it also has a rich history. The caves were a hiding place for enslaved people and the Spanish in the 17th century and later served as a nightclub in the 1990s. Today, the caves are open for tourists and offer a moving glimpse into Jamaican history. Visitors can explore the cave system on their own or take a guided tour, and there is also a small museum on site.

Jamaican Food Tours

Check out one of the city’s food tours! You’ll get to try dishes from some of the area’s most famous restaurants and learn about Jamaican culture and history. You’ll also get to explore some of the city’s coolest neighborhoods.

You’ll begin your culinary adventure when you meet with your guide and explore Montego. You might try jerk chicken, one of Jamaica’s most common dishes- it tastes delicious! Whether dining at an authentic restaurant or roadside stand – everything smells & looks fantastic, so enjoy every minute while learning more than just “What’re some good places nearby?

Walk with the hooligans

Are you looking for something unusual to do and love dogs? You will love the special tour Montego Bay Animal Haven haven has put together!

Beautiful Jamaica is also home to a large population of stray dogs, many of them in poor shape. I have been super excited to read about walking with the hooligans: spending a day with dogs, and getting to know Jamaica a bit better while supporting an amazing cause. Tammy Browne, the founder of the Montego Bay Animal Haven, in collaboration with Irina Bruce from IrieLab–a company specializing in interactive experiences for Jamaican visitors, has created something unique.

This tour allows you to explore the hills with large packs of rescued dogs! The best part? These playful “hooligans” will romp and remind you of how wonderful Jamaica is as they show you their world. Whether going solo or with a few friends, this tour offers an unforgettable way to experience inland Jamaica while making some four-legged pals along the way.

Hike Hours: 9 am – 10 am
Visiting Hours: 10 am – 12 noon
Costs: $65 including transport

Take in Jamaica's lush side: Animal Fram & Nature Reserve

Things to do in Montego Bay go beyond the busy nightlife typically associated with this paradise island – Animal Farm and Nature Reserve is just a 30-minute drive away, making it the perfect destination for anyone who needs to escape and relax. Powered by solar energy, these eco-cottages come with everything you need – from views of the forest canopy to the farm animals that provide a melodic soundtrack – so you can truly immerse yourself in nature. From birdwatching across the fields to floating down the roaring Great River on a raft, there’s plenty of ways to explore Jamaica’s lush green side here. So forget finding peace and quiet in the more typical resort hotels, as Animal Farm and Nature Reserve offers an unforgettable experience that allows you to get away from it all.

Route Taxis are the way to move around Jamaica. Official route taxis have a red license plate. In MoBay, you’ll see the route they are catering written on the doors. Route taxis are the cheapest and most flexible way to move around. Just be careful to enter/exit on the route. Otherwise, you’ll be charged as a charter taxi.
Public Bus: The bus stop is downtown. I couldn’t find a schedule. They seem to go more frequently than the Knutsford.
Knutsford: Leaving Moby Airport, Jamaica’s luxury bus connects more significant destinations. Be aware that the time stated refers to calculated driving time and not the actual time to reach a destination. Adding to the driving time are stops and bus switches which are not apparent when buying the ticket. Due to Covid, there are fewer buses than usual, and it is better to buy the ticket online.

Airport

Arriving at MoBay Sangster International is quite picturesque as the airport is located right by the beach. The airport is also only 10 minutes from the HipStrip, 15 to downtown, and 20 minutes up Mount Salem. Sangster International Airport is also small making it extra comfortable to move around.

Safety

As a female traveler, I felt safe. Obviously, there are some hustlers you’ll be fine with as long as you are friendly and walk with a purpose.
Montego’s SoZo’s
Zones of Special Operations were established about 10 years ago around Jamaica’s cities after crime escalated. You’ll notice the military around as soon as you enter a ZoSo. Salem is such a SoZo in MoBay. Be aware, but don’t let it scare you. Flankers, Canterbury, and the area around the dump up beach are best avoided at night, though.

Tap water in Jamaica

Even though Jamaica is considered a third-world country, it provides the best water quality in the region. You are, therefore, safe to drink tap water. This is especially true in the cities. However, if it makes you feel uneasy, bring your Lifestraw pro. It will keep your drinks cold for 24 hrs, too!

Biggest challenge for the responsible traveler

Trash

Make sure to bring a foldable food container and cutlery with you! The amount of waste caused by food sold on the street is incredible.

Sunscreen

Protect Jamaica’s marine life and bring reef-friendly sunscreen!

The best place to stay

I can’t recommend staying in Mount Salem with Jah B and Cherri enough. They are wonderful people, have an inspiring spirit, and have many stories to tell. Not only did I feel very at home with my hosts, but also very much enjoyed the authentic neighborhood away from the hustle of the Hip Strip. Being away from the main tourist area also meant finding some authentic food just around the corner.

Marijuana or "the herb"

Marijuana is not entirely legal in Jamaica. Yet, it is decriminalized. Meaning it’s almost impossible to get in trouble for. Quality and price vary greatly. Get a prescription card (cost $10) from a legal pharmacy to make it legal. In MoBay Island Strains Herb House would be the place to go.

Jamaica Itinerary

Places to visit in Jamaica

I’ll be going back to Jamaica for the fourth time this April. I promise you: no matter how many times you’ll return, you’ll always discover something new in Jamaica!

Belmont | Peter Tosh’s birthplace

Belmont | Peter Tosh’s birthplace

I left Negril seeking a more peaceful and authentic experience further South. Belmont seemed like the perfect option! About midway to Treasure Beach, Belmont comes alive on the weekends and is quiet during the week. Belmont is stretched along the Highway and consists of charming restaurants, bars, and Berry selling the best pudding in town.

JAMAICA
Belmont Itinerary

A sleepy beach town coming alive on the weekend

Duration: at least one week

Budget: $ 75 per day

Stay:  Natural Mystic Cottages

I left Negril seeking a more peaceful and authentic experience further South. Belmont seemed like the perfect option! About midway to Treasure Beach, Belmont comes alive on the weekends and is quiet during the week. Belmont is stretched along the Highway and consists of charming restaurants, bars, and Berry selling the best pudding in town.

There are smaller stretches of beach right in Belmont, which you’ll likely only have to share with the local fishermen. Even though Belmont might not be the place to be for adventures, it offers quite some action away from town.

Feel the weekend party vibes

Belmont was the sleepiest town on my journey (at least during the week), but it seemed to be THE place on the weekends. Locals and tourists are coming in to have a good time by the water and continue the party in one of the beach bars.

IMG 4530

Enjoy Belmont's beach

Belmont’s beach stretches are small, but you’ll likely have them all to yourself. The waters shimmer in all shades of turquoise and are beautiful to look at. If you get up early enough, you can watch the fishermen come in and buy the day’s catch!

Bluefields Beach Park

A 15-minute car ride along the Black River to Savanna-la-mar main road will lead to an admittedly small but about 400 long stretches of white sand and stunning turquoise waters. I went during the week and had the beach entirely to myself. You’ll find street food, music, and a lively vibe on the weekends.

Peter Tosh Mausoleum

Belmont is also home to the last remains of Peter Tosh, a founding member of the Wailers. Unfortunately, the mausoleum was closed at the time of my visit, but I still got to take a sneak peek. The grave is painted in Rasta Colors and continues to be a political statement to “legalize it.” You’ll see the paintings of a Rastaman with a huge joint, huge marijuana leaves, and a red-eyed Lion of Zion on Tosh’s actual tomb. Usually, tours tell the story of Bob Marley’s former band member.

How to get to Belmont

Belmont is about 2,5 hours ride from Negril by Route Taxi. I always got extra lucky with the transfer as I got to hop on an almost complete taxi in Savanna a Mar. A cab costs you around $120.

You’ll be leaving by Rote Taxi as well as there are now buses.

Safety

It’s a tiny village, extra quiet during the week. I always felt very safe. The only “danger” I sensed was the traffic! Cars and motos go crazy on the road, and there is no pathway for walkers. So pay extra attention after dark!

Money

There is no ATM in Belmont, so better stack up before going. If you run out, it will take 45 minutes by bus to Black Rivers or 30 minutes up to Savanna a Mar.

Best Time to Travel

The climate stays pleasant all year round. It might rain a bit more during hurricane season from June to November.

Party & Nightlife

Belmont and its 2-3 over-the water-bars seem to be the place to be on the weekends. Bluefields beach park is also a popular hang-out spot for locals on the weekend!

Tap water

Even though Jamaica is considered a third-world country, it provides the best water quality in the region. You are, therefore, safe to drink tap water. This is especially true in the cities. Hammock – no words needed. Your hammock is definitely worth bringing if you stay in places for a while! So many accommodations lack comfortable spaces for hanging out,so it’s super friendly to just hang up your own hammock.

Mosquito Net – I started bringing a mosquito net to placeswhere I knew my stays would be more rustic. Simply
because I hate having mosquito bites and also try to avoid them due to transmitted diseases such as malaria and dengue

Yoga Mat – I started to bring my travel yoga mat along whenever I knew that I would spend more time in one place and have the space to practice yoga. Jamaica is definitely a place to bring your yoga mat! you’ll find plenty of beautiful spots to practice. Plus, bringing my own mat got me doing yoga more often!

Travel reading light – what a gamechanger! As I love reading and many places lack comfortable reading light, it’s awesome. I also use it as a flash light or low light when
trying to avoid mosquitos. The battery life is amazing!

Lifestraw water filter – my number one travel essential ever. It’s so nice not having to worry about using plastic bottles.
Plus: the average stays super fresh and cool for 24 hours!

Clthes line  – matter how expensive or rustic the place is.
Drying space is often so limited!

Items to pack in your carry-on

Even though I fly regularly, I still get a little anxious and uncomfortable on intercontinental flights. So I try to bring everything I need on the plane to make traveling as comfortable as possible.

I have a really hard time sleeping while traveling. Here are my tried and tested favorite carry-on items to bring so you can catch up on some sleep!

Personal favorite

Be comfortable even in the middle seat

I try to spend as much time sleeping as possible. After testing countless options, I found the inflatable pillow the perfect companion. It creates something to lean against even if you’re in the middle seat and is super small when deflated.

Colored lip balm
One of my personal favorites and a must-have anywhere I go, especially on planes where my lips get dehydrated.

CC Cream
I just feel a lot fresher when I look, fresher. So I carry my CC Cream with me any apply it shortly before leaving thee plane.

Stay entertained while traveling

Flights and long bus rides can get a bit boring. So I try to keep myself occupied when I can't sleep.

Travel Guide

Last minute inspiration

I like to get some last-minute information and travel ideas before reaching a destination. Lonely Planet has been my companion for years, providing me with endless practical tips and information.

Free trial period

Audible

Audio Books & Podcasts

My go-to App when I want to tune out: Is Audible! I love their wide range of audio books and original podcasts. You can download them before traveling and listen offline. They often have a 30-day trail period for free.

Book

Best reads set in Central America

I love reading, especially when I travel. Books written by local authors are usually my go-to choice. I have read almost all of Allende's books and love her style of writing. For more books sparking your wanderlust to Central America click here.

The basics

To make sure your electronics make it to your destination savely, bring them in your carry-on. Make sure to put pack your power bank in your carry-on, too as they are forbidden to check in.

Insta 360 Go

Small and versatile

I love my Insta 360 Go because it is so tiny (smaller than my thumb) and super durable. It's water resistant and comes with very handy accessories which allow you to bring your Insta 360 Go wherever you go. I love attaching it to my shirt and walking around hands-free.

Refurbished

Refurbed Mac Book

Save emissions & spare your wallet

We may not settle the argument between Mac Book and Windows computers but I am sure we can agree on refurbed items. Besides sparing your budget, refurbished items are a great way to save resources and emissions. I bought my Mac Book from rebuy.

Eco-friendly

Power Bank

As conscious as possible

Power banks are a lifesaver and super useful when on the road. However, power banks are never the most eco-friendly choice due to the resources used. Nimble tries to make its products as eco-friendly and socially conscious as possible. My favorite is the CHAMP Pro Portable Charger, as it also allows Laptop charging.

Headphones

Tune out

Headphone with AUX

Bring your own headphones to avoid having to use the ones provided by the airlines. This way you'll save resources and have a better acoustic experience.

Wireless headphones

My personal favorite is Beat Fit True Wireless earbuds. They are super comfortable and the secure-fit wingtips keep them in place. I find it super handy to be able to switch between transparency and noise-canceling mode.

A little extra comfort

Don't forget about those two essentials

Lifestraw Go

The most essential travel gadget

Lifestraw Go is the best water purifier I have ever owned! Not only does it make tap water safe to drink, but it also keeps my drinks cool for 24 hours. This comes in so handy, especially when I'm traveling. For instance, after passing airport security and through a long flight, Lifestraw Go allows me to fill up a bottle of iced cold water - great for staying hydrated. Lifestraw Go is literally a lifesaver, and now I don't even have to consider buying single-use plastic bottled water again -that's one less thing for me to worry about when traveling!

Nasal Spray

No congestion during tak-off

Having congested years during take-off can be pretty painful. To help with that, I use a nasal spray 2 hours before take-off, right before taking off and before landing.

Clothing to pack for Central America

Things to know when packing:

1. Central America’s cities are exciting places to go shopping. However, fairly produced or eco-friendly clothing is pretty hard to come by.

2. Laundry facilities are frequent and pretty cheap.

3. Speaking from experience: shopping for souvenirs is more fun than for cloths

Sandals

Recycled & Conscious

Deux Mains's sandals are simply stunning, not just in their look but also because of their ethical approach. They demonstrate an admirable commitment to local sources and traceability; almost all materials used in producing Deux Mains sandals are sourced locally in Haiti, even having shifted towards using tires that would otherwise be burned. To top this ethical approach off, they go a step further by manufacturing their sandals in a 100% solar-powered facility.

Packing for Central America's cities

There are many beautiful cities and villages to explore during your trip through Central America. To feel comfortable and appropriately dressed, consider that most Central American countries are slightly more conservative. To avoid standing out and also being able to enter churches, we suggest covering your knee and bringing a cover for your shoulders.

Discover Costa Rica off the beaten path

Duration: at least one week

Budget: $ 130 per day

Stay: Poor Man’s Paradise Lodge or Corcovado Guest House

Most people who visit Costa Rica end up at places like Arenal, Monteverde, and Manuel Antonio. Those places are stunning and absolutely should be visited! However, there’s an off-the-beaten-path that is one of Costa Rica’s best-kept secrets. This destination is the Osa Peninsula. It holds an astounding 2.5% of the WORLD’S biodiversity within its 700 square miles of land, and National Geographic named it the “most biologically intense place on earth.” The area is well-preserved and teeming with natural beauty and wildlife.

Sustainable travel at its finest

The Osa Peninsula is on Costa Rica’s southern Pacific coast. It takes six hours to get there by car or a short 45-minute propeller plane ride to its tiny regional airport. There are a few small towns on the peninsula, but it is relatively undeveloped. The tour companies, hotels, and locals who live there are highly committed to sustainability, making it a model for eco-travel. The Osa Peninsula is a fantastic travel destination that you can feel good about visiting.

Why is it a secret? The truth is, most people don’t have the time or want to make an effort to visit.
The pristine flora and fauna that make it so unique also make it difficult to reach. If you decide to
make the journey there, you’ll experience one of the most beautiful places in the world without too
many tourists.

Visit Corcovado National Park One

National Park. This nature preserve makes up 1/3 of the Osa Peninsula and is Costa Rica’s crowning jewel. The park is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, including monkeys, sloths, toucans, and iguanas. I was fascinated by the capuchin monkeys that inhabit the park, and I also saw plenty of other animals during my three-day tour. The experience of observing such a wide range of creatures in their natural habitat was truly unforgettable. The park is also outstanding, with lush rainforest and pristine beaches.

Some exciting places to see in the Corcovado National Park:

· La Sirena: a place where you can see bull sharks and alligators
· Leona: the best place to see turtle births
· El Tigre: some of the park’s best viewpoints
· Los Patos: Rincón River, waterfalls, and tall trees

Stay at an Eco Lodge

The Osa Peninsula is a prime sustainable tourism destination with outstanding eco-lodges. These places seemingly blend into the jungles surrounding them (or have private jungles). One of our favorite places to stay on the peninsula is the Playa Cativo Lodge because it’s an all-inclusive experience perched between the water and wilderness. It’s an outstanding Osa Peninsula eco-lodge that checks all the boxes.

Surf some of Costa Rica's best waves

Local Ticos (Costa Ricans) know that the country’s best surf spots are on the Osa Peninsula. There are consistent breaks that are ideal for surfers of all skill levels. Playa Matapalo, in the Cabo Matapalo, is the best surfing spot in the Osa Peninsula. Some Ticos claim that you can ride up to 1,000 feet on a single wave on a good day!

Hang out in Puerto Jimenez

Puerto Jimenez is the starting point for many Osa Peninsula tours, but it is also worth checking out. It is one of the few developed places in the area but still blends seamlessly into nature. There is a fantastic wildlife sanctuary, delicious local restaurants, and intriguing shops there. If you’re looking
for something exciting to do in the evenings, the town has the area’s best nightlife.

Go on a canopy tour

Canopy tours are a popular activity on the Osa Peninsula. You can explore the lush rainforest up close and personal by zooming through the trees. Tours typically have ziplines, suspension bridges, and Tarzan swings that provide unique vantage points. On the ground, tours typically provide local snacks and beverages. Canopy tours use eco-friendly technology that doesn’t disturb the surrounding ecology.

Get ready to travel Osa Peninsula

How to get to the Osa Peninsula:

Two main ways to reach the Osa Peninsula from San José are driving and taking a propeller plane. If you’re driving, you’ll want a four-wheel vehicle because there are many dirt roads and streams (with no bridges). The journey can take up to 8 hours, and you should not attempt this in one sitting.
Driving is an excellent option if you plan on visiting other areas, such as Manuel Antonio, Uvita, and Dominical.

The most popular way to get to the peninsula is by plane. Sansa Air is a domestic airline that makes the hour-long trip between San José and Puerto Jimenez.

Best time to visit the Osa Peninsula:

The climate on the Osa Peninsula is tropical, with lots of heat and humidity. The best season to visit is from December to May during the dry season because hurricanes often pass through during the rainy season.

Safety in the Osa Peninsula:

Costa Rica as a country is generally one of the safest places in Latin America. The biggest threat to tourists on the Osa Peninsula is Mother Nature. It is a very humid location, so reef-safe sunscreen and lots of water are essential. As with any destination, it’s critical to be aware of your surroundings
and belongings.

Nightlife and entertainment:

The best nightlife on the Osa Peninsula is in Puerto Jimenez. You’ll find plenty of places that host DJs playing everything from the blues to salsa music.

Tap water

The tap water is by no means suitable to drink. Bring your Lifestraw Pro to avoid plastic pollution and keep your drinks cool.

Biggest challenge for the responsible traveler

Trash: bring your collapsable food container & Lifestraw Pro with you to avoid causing plastic pollution.
Sunscreen: Protect Costa Rica’s marine life and wear reef-save sunscreen.
